Benjamin Moore White Dove (OC 17): LRV, Undertones, & Best Uses

Benjamin Moore White Dove is a warm, soft white paint color, and one that I recommend ALL THE TIME to my clients. And it ain’t no one-tricky pony, either. It works well on kitchen cabinets, trim, and interior walls, and is even popular as a whole home paint color.

However, whites can be the hardest to choose, as on the small scale, their undertones can be hard to figure out, leaving you nervous that your walls will be too creamy, too stark, too cold, etc.

Thank goodness you found me (just joking…kind of). Seriously, though, learning how White Dove might look in your space is an important part of the process. So, let’s see what quirks White Dove has up its colorful little sleeves (Lord knows, we’ve all got ’em).

IS BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE A WARM OR COOL WHITE?

White Dove is a warm, soft white paint color and one of the most popular shades for walls, cabinets, and trims, and whole homes.

But while it’s a warm white, for sure, it’s not overly creamy or yellow (depending on who you ask; this is a subjective point). This makes White Dove great for those who want warmth, but are nervous of too much yellow. But again – subjective. We’ll get into undertones shortly.

Most importantly, White Dove is NOT an off-white paint color. It’s a white; just a soft one.

If you have a north-facing light, White Dove can be a nice soft balance to the cool, flat light. With a south-facing room or a space with afternoon western sunshine, you may find White Dove leaning more into its warmth.

THE LRV & DEPTH OF WHITE DOVE

According to Benjamin Moore, White Dove has an LRV of 83.16. With this depth, White Dove is a WHITE, not an off-white. However, with this slightly lower LRV, White Dove is softer than many popular, brighter shades of white.

Are you not sure what LRV is? It’s a game-changer in the paint-pickin’ world—read all about it HERE.

With this type of depth, White Dove is great for those who want a commitment to white, without it looking stark, harsh, or cold.

WHITE DOVE’S UNDERTONES

Many people turn to White Dove expecting ‘a relatively true white’, but as discussed earlier, it has warmth and softness compared to some of the other popular whites.

With a dash of gray for calming and creamy yellow undertones, White Dove suits a wide range of interior finishes.

IS WHITE DOVE TOO YELLOW?

Yes, if you’re overly sensitive to yellow, you might find it a bit too warm and too yellow. However, if you understand that the best and only way to get a beautiful warmth in a white is via yellow, then you might just be okay (albeit some very minor twitching).

Ideas to Update Your 2000s Home: SERIES

Personally, I don’t love yellow or cream paint colors for my own home, but I have White Dove plastered all over it and love it.

It’s like Frank’s Hot Sauce – I put that $#%!* on everything.

The key is not to pair it with a white that’s whiter than it, as that will showcase its warmth and yellow undertones.

They were smart to make all the white surfaces the same shade.

You might not even notice White Dove’s warmth in a small sample. However, if you pair it with products that are starker or cleaner white, such as white appliancescool-toned marble, or a white subway tile backsplash, it could appear more yellow-cream in comparison.

SITUATIONS WHERE WHITE DOVE MIGHT LOOK MORE YELLOW OR TOO WARM…

  • White Dove can appear even warmer in south-facing light and grab more yellow, but so can many whites—south-facing light is powerful. Heck, even in northern light, it can do this sometimes. That’s why you HAVE to sample it carefully in your space.
  • Pair it with cool-toned marble or standard ‘white’ quartz countertops, and you’re likely to see more warmth and undertone.
  • If you have white appliances, White Dove can look considerably more yellow in comparison to your white appliances (including GE Cafe White).

Here’s the other side of the previously shown room (below). Notice how its look changes from wall to wall – ahhhhh the glory of white!

WILL WHITE DOVE LOOK GRAY, PINK, GREEN, OR DINGY/DIRTY?

Let’s start with pink and green. The fact that some people see pink in White Dove and others see green goes to show how versatile it can be – and how uncommitted to undertones it truly is. This is because White Dove is pretty darn well-balanced between red and green.

If your sample of White Dove looks pink or green, it’s probably because…

  • COMPARISON: Colors often ‘seem’ a certain way when compared to others. So, if you’re comparing it with a white that’s more yellow or greenish, it might seem pinkish ‘in comparison’, (even if it’s not).
  • LANDSCAPING: Whether it’s trees, a ton of grass, or nearby landscaping, your exterior can easily reflect onto your interior walls.
  • LIGHT BULBS: Consider adjusting the Kelvins and the quality of your light bulbs and see if your opinion changes.

Here’s White Dove looking like its badass and beautiful self with a good amount of natural light…

My favorite Kelvins (bulbs) when using Benjamin Moore White Dove is 2700-3000K

As for whether White Dove is too dingy/dirty/gray, this is open to perception. It’s a grounded, more muted, warm white with a touch of gray. This neutral base cuts back on the degree of YELLOW you see. If you clean that up, you’ll see more yellow (i.e., Benjamin Moore Simply White).

BEnjamin MOore White Dove entryway small with a bench, horizontal shiplap with hooks, wood floor, red front door

Here are a few situations to watch for with White Dove, where it could flash a bit gray or dirty…

  • If you put it next to a cleaner, warmer shade of white (where the yellow undertone is more obvious)
  • Next to a traditional cream paint color (which will likely have more yellow undertone)
  • In a low-light space or dark room

In this next room, White Dove looks slightly grayish in a few areas, but overall, its soft warmth prevails…

White Dove doesn’t want to look gray, being a soft, warm white (it told me so). However, the above things can affect its potential—this is about the surroundings, NOT the paint color itself. If White Dove looks dingy or dirty, you may want to consider a warmer and brighter shade of white (or adjust your interior lighting/Kelvins).

This is exceptionally gray for White Dove – it RARELY looks this muted. However, it’s being hit with a triple-whammy (which is also what Tim calls his favorite Friday-night moves)…

  1. This space has a lot of shaded areas
  2. I don’t know the exposure, but it sure as heck doesn’t look warm
  3. It’s very directly contrasting with Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace on the cabinets and trims.

The 3 Best Whites for North-Facing Rooms

With a rustic, modern farmhouse style, White Dove settles in as the perfect soft, warm neutral for walls, trims, ceilings, and doors.

White Dove isn’t a CLEAN white. The cleaner a warm white is, the more yellow you’ll see. This is why White Dove can be a great happy medium between a flatter, duller white and one that’s too yellow.

White Dove also accommodates a slightly cleaner, simpler look, as shown with these basic shaker-style doors…

WHAT’S THE BEST TRIM COLOR WITH WHITE DOVE?

  • If you have White Dove walls, consider painting your cabinets and trim White Dove.
  • With White Dove cabinets, your walls and trim should also be White Dove.
  • If you have White Dove trim and want white walls or cabinets, consider painting them White Dove.

Now, one thing that gets my titties in a tussle is that even when you use the same white, you can still get subtle shifts in undertones and temperatures (which drives this lil Ginger even crazier than she already is). This is because the formulation changes depending on the type of paint you use and the sheen/finish. C’est la vie, which is French for MOVING ALONG (it’s not, but all the same).

Believe it or not, this is all White Dove – cabinets, walls, & trims!

If you have White Dove trims, cabinets OR walls, every other white surface should ALSO BE White Dove – don’t switch whites unless you really need/want to.

WHERE WHITE DOVE DOES (& DOESN’T) LOOK ITS BEST

While White Dove is massively flexible and far more than a one-trick pony, it has its limitations and preferences (don’t we all).

To start, let’s summarize the best places to use White Dove, along with those that aren’t so hot.

  • White Dove is one of the best white paint colors for kitchen cabinets, trims, and doors.
  • It’s great as a whole-home paint color, as it works on walls, trim, doors, and ceilings.
  • As an exterior paint color, while it can work on siding/stucco, it’s popular on trims.
  • White Dove works well in single rooms and open-concept spaces. This is because it’s a transitional color that suits a wide range of others (which we’ll look at shortly).
  • It doesn’t work well with most cream cabinets and trims.

Now for the guts n’ the glory…

DOES WHITE DOVE GO WITH WHITE SUBWAY TILE OR APPLIANCES?

HECK no. With very few exceptions, White Dove (as a cabinet color) doesn’t go well with most white subway tiles, as the standard subway tile is a bright white – not a soft, warm one. The same goes for white appliances, which tend to be cool white.

Placing White Dove with these finishes can make White Dove look warmer and creamier than you might want.

DOES WHITE DOVE GO WITH OAK CABINETS OR WOOD FINISHES?

Yes, White Dove can be amazeballs with a wide range of wood cabinets (especially most oaks), another reason it’s one of my ‘best white paint colors‘ for a variety of surfaces.

Take a look at this historic home and its beautiful dark wood trims. A warm white like White Dove is a gorgeous, high-contrast partner…

In particular, I love White Dove with the more ‘brownish’ woods – ones that aren’t overly yellow, orange, red, or pink. All the same, I’ve seen it look downright gorgeous with most.

IS WHITE DOVE GOOD FOR A WHOLE HOME?

A million times, yes, White Dove is a great whole-home choice if you’re looking for simplicity. With this choice, you’ll also want your trims and doors to match, so you don’t end up with a mix-and-match (and potentially fugly) white pairing.

IS WHITE DOVE A GOOD COLOR FOR CABINETS & TRIMS?

ABSOLUTELY! However, it has to be the right type of white paint color for your countertop, backsplash, or flooring. Here are a few things to watch for…

WHAT WHITES GO WITH WHITE DOVE?

If you’re hellbent on painting your trims or cabinets a different shade of white, make sure a) your trims and/or cabinets are the brighter white of the two, b) the brighter white isn’t more yellow/cleaner than White Dove.

This will likely lead you to Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace or Sherwin Williams White Snow. Please note that using this method for your walls and trims will make White Dove appear creamier than it might normally, and less like white.

What Two White Paint Colors Go Together?

WHITES THAT DO & DON’T GO WITH WHITE DOVE

Let’s cover the colors I’m often asked about…

  • Sherwin Williams Pure White: While people do it, I don’t recommend it – their LRVs are too similar, and Pure White isn’t warm enough.
  • Benjamin Moore Cloud White: No, Cloud White is too warm and yellow to coordinate with White Dove.
  • Benjamin Moore Simply White: It’s not my favorite combo. While Simply White has a nice brightness, being whiter than White Dove, it’s a touch too clean and yellow.
  • Benjamin Moore Oxford White: Of these 4, yes, Oxford White is my favorite choice and goes okay (shown in the above photo).

SHOULD I Paint My Wood Cabinets White? A QUESTIONNAIRE

WHAT COLORS ARE SIMILAR?

When it comes to white paint colors, it can be hard to find ‘comparable whites’ between brands, and you should NEVER color match.

However, several shades are super similar to White Dove and worth comparing. It’s amazing how a subtle tweak in undertone, temperature, or depth can make one color the best shade compared to another.

BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE COMPARED TO SWISS COFFEE

White Dove and Swiss Coffee are KISSIN’ cousins (illegal in most States, but not on my blog!). However, there are some subtle differences…

  • WHITE DOVE LRV: 83.16
  • SWISS COFFEE LRV: 81.91

The above means that White Dove is whiter than Swiss Coffee, which borders on the off-white range. In my (extensive) experience, White Dove is better than Swiss Coffee.

Medium bronze metal roof, Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee board and batten and horizontal siding, mahogany front doors, Savannah Gray and Georgetown brick on foundation and steps

Also, of the two, Swiss Coffee is slightly more likely to grab a vague green undertone (vague is an understatement). However, with these two whites being very similar, I prefer White Dove as it’s a bit more predictable.

Color Review of Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee

WHITE DOVE COMPARED TO BM STEAM

You’ll be hard-pressed to find two white paint colors more similar than White Dove and Steam.

  • WHITE DOVE LRV: 83.16
  • STEAM: 84.2

The above difference is akin to splitting hairs – short curly ones. White Dove and Steam are about the same depth, with Steam fractionally lighter.

As for undertones, White Dove and Steam share a similar creamy warmth without an abundance of commitment to yellow. However, in comparing the two, you might notice that Steam seems just a wink more yellow, just a touch.

WHITE DOVE COMPARED TO SHERWIN WILLIAMS ALABASTER

These are two great comparisons as they approach creamy white warmth in different ways.

Sherwin Williams Alabaster painted warm white cabinets, subway tile backsplash, maple wood lower cabinets, stainless steel countertop. Emerstone Dynamic Gold white quartz countertop

White Dove has a passive warmth that might seem warm and creamy compared to a white like Sherwin Williams Pure White, but falls back compared to a creamier white like Alabaster.

  • WHITE DOVE LRV: 83.16
  • SW ALABASTER LRV: 82

Sherwin Williams Alabaster: MORE IMAGES & Info

While the difference in LRV isn’t shocking, it’s enough to set Alabaster as a softer white than White Dove and closer to the off-white range. Combine its added depth with its warmth, and Alabaster is the more creamy shade of white.

Sherwin Williams Alabaster coffered warm white painted ceiling, white built in cabinets in sides of fireplace, white mantel

On the other hand, White Dove is more flexible in terms of average wall colors and interior finishes.

WHAT’S A SHERWIN WILLIAMS ALTERNATIVE TO WHITE DOVE?

I would love to find the perfect match for Benjamin Moore White Dove. However, while Sherwin Williams has similar shades, there’s no perfect match.

Also, I’ve tried several times, and Sherwin Williams can’t color-match White Dove.

Why?

Staircase in split level home, wainscoting panel moldings added, Sherwin Williams Cold Foam, Balanced Beige shiplp, wood hand railing and black spindlers, home decor

Sherwin Williams Cold Foam

Paint brands use different bases to make their paints, which means they aren’t starting on the same playing field. Because of this, Sherwin Williams’ version of White Dove comes up more yellow (wooooof).

These colors are your best samples to compare with White Dove…

  • Sherwin Williams Cold Foam: Has a bit more of an interesting yellow undertone compared to White Dove’s more balanced look.
  • Sherwin Williams Cotton: Could look a bit dirtier/dingier, which is good if you find White Dove a touch too colorful/warm.
  • I’d say Sherwin Williams Greek Villa and Alabaster are your best shots at a similar look.

WHAT WALL COLORS GO WITH WHITE DOVE?

Ooooh boy, here we go. Seriously, where do I start and stop? There are so many colors that pair well with White Dove trims or cabinets. Mind you, it depends on where you need a color for adjoining walls, adjoining room, cabinets, accent wall, etc. Regardless, these colors will get you started…

PROS & CONS: A QUICK SUMMARY OF WHITE DOVE

  • Benjamin Moore White Dove is a warm, soft white paint color, not a bright white. This makes it versatile for a wide range of finishes and lighting situations
  • It has a yellow undertone, but it’s not strong. If you have true white finishes (e.g. subway tile) it could be a touch too warm.
  • Its LRV is 83.16, which is what makes it a soft white.
  • It pairs well with a wide range of paint colors, including greiges, greens, tans, and creams.
  • Its undertones don’t commit to green or pink, making it versatile.
  • White Dove suits almost every wood stain.
  • While technically, it ‘goes with’ cream cabinets and trims, it usually looks ass backwards to have creamy cabinets/trims darker than the warm white walls.

  1. Hoping to paint my walls in White Dove. My trim is KM Swiss Coffee and is in good condition and am hoping to get by without painting it all. I would love to hear your thoughts on how these two colors might work/or not together.

  2. Kylie, would you mind sharing the nice creamy beige color used on the kitchen cabinets in the photo with White Dove on the walls and what looks to be an off-black for the island space? I’m looking for other colors that pair well with White Dove. Thank you!

    1. Hi Jennifer! Believe it or not, but that’s actually Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter slightly darkened. It’s a warm gray with a subtle green undertone! But it sure looks nice with White Dove :). If you want more warmth, considering BM Edgecomb Gray, perhaps 25% darker for a bit more body.

  3. Kylie, I have been following your website for years and it has gone from a simple straight forward website/blough, to a website where I can’t find anything and it doesn’t matter anyway because it is mostly covered with google ads. I don’t like it anymore. Amy Shaffer

    1. Hi Amy, I totally understand! The tricky thing is that I blog for free, I give information out to help others for free and the ad revenue is one way that I support my family. Without it, I actually can’t blog at all!

      1. Hi Kylie,

I just want to thank you again for all the amazing guidance and information you give your readers! You are head and shoulders above the rest and I have never found your ads to be hurdles to accessing the excellent information you provide!

        Thanks so much!

  4. Hi Kylie, I hope you’re doing well. Though I only recently stumbled upon your blog due to an unexpected but necessary remodel in our home, I have to kindly disagree with previous comments that insinuate your website is unhelpful and difficult to navigate – if anything, there is almost too much amazing and helpful info for a novice like myself to take in, and I’m incredibly grateful for your time, talent, and humor! That being said, I’ve been religiously pouring over your blog posts the past few days and have a quick question (if you have time). As I mentioned, we are left doing some unplanned remodeling in our kitchen because of a leak. We have the dated tropical brown granite countertops we are stuck with, but need to paint our cabinets. I’m hopeful to brighten up our kitchen (and simultaneously lighten up the look of the countertops) by painting the cabinets “white.” I know because of the colors in the granite that it needs to be a warm white, but I don’t love “creamy” whites or whites with obvious yellow (i.e. Navajo white). My kitchen has north-facing windows, and I was thinking either ballet white on the walls with white dove cupboards/trim, or white duck walls and edgecomb gray cabinets. Do you have strong thoughts about one combo working better than the other with tropical brown granite countertops? And what things do I need to consider with the color of our wood flooring? Again, super appreciate any time or insight you have – I’d love to do a consult but unfortunately, I have neither enough time or money at the moment. Your blog has been INCREDIBLY helpful getting me started, and I can’t thank you enough!

    1. Teri, what a NICE note to get, thank you! I take those comments to heart and they’re hard for me to read, so thank you for this :).

Normally I wouldn’t answer questions like this, but I LIKE you and appreciate you. So, I see no problem with trying White Dove on the cabinets and trim (yes, they should be the SAME white), as long as White Dove suits your backsplash too!

As for wall colour, there are quite a few variations on Tropical Brown, so I can’t be too specific. I can say that I would lean away from anything like White Duck/Ballet White, thinking the could have a touch too much of a yellow base for your countertop. I like the idea of Edgecomb Gray MUCH more.

I hope this helps or at least ELIMINATES a few thoughts for you :).

      1. Kylie, you are the BEST, and it helped TREMENDOUSLY- it’s a big relief to know I’m in the ballpark! 😉 Thank you so much! Again, I super appreciate your time and am hopeful that if we ever do a PLANNED remodel, I can budget for your E-design services and work with your funny, sassy self directly. All the best. 🙂

  5. I am hoping to paint my cabinets in Dove white but worries it might be too white with my granite.. I have bianco Antico granite… which is a variation of creams/white browns and grey. My walls are Collingwood so if I go with a warmer white I am worries it might just blend in too much with the Collingwood on the walls. What are your thoughts Please…

I love your page.. your color review videos helped me choose Collingwood for my walls and I am so happy with it.

  6. Hi Kylie – wanted to add to the chorus comments letting you know how great your site is. The way you lay out information is SO helpful for taking notes on different colors and combinations so that I can compare across different colors. Thank you for the wonderful resource. I don’t usually post comments anywhere but the thought that you might have been left with any negative feelings from the previous feedback compelled me to want to try and balance it our by expressing my gratitude and letting you know that your approach and distillation if information is really helpful.

  7. Hi! I was wondering if you knew what percentage the Edgecomb Gray was lightened in the photo with the White Dove trim with lightened Edgecomb Gray walls? Also, do you by any chance know the details for the floor in that photo? Thank you so much!!

    1. Hi Caroline, that’s Edgecomb 75% lighter! The floor is Goodfellow and I believe it was in the Riverside Heights collection or something – stain colour ‘stone’ :).

  8. You had mentioned somewhere that you can brighten up trim paint by adding an additional 4-6 drops of white to the paint. Will that mess with the undertones i.e., whitetail?

    1. Hi Jennifer! Nope, it really shouldn’t. It can make it seem that bit whiter/brighter, but the undertone should still stay soft and yellow 🙂

  9. Hello Kylie – Love your blog and Youtube content.

We are currently renovating our master bedroom in a minimalist “Japandi” style. I picked out a soft light grey ceramic floor tile, matte black fixtures and a light walnut color vanity cabinet. The bathroom has 2 windows (south and west facing). I would like to keep the wall paint color warm even with white in mind; I was wondering if you would recommend BM White Dove or Plaster of Paris as the wall paint. As well, any recommendations for ceiling and trim color with these 2 potential wall colors?

  10. Hi! I am using alabaster white paint and was curious what color you painted your interior doors! I love the look of the light gray with the white. Thank you

    1. Ahhh, that’s Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter, 25% darker (maaaybe 50%, I can’t remember), but the difference is subtle :).

  11. Your website has helped me so much, and I can’t wait to get the results of my e-consultation! I have one question with Dove White walls/trims/cabinets…what color should the ceiling be? Ceiling paint OK or a mistake? (NW exposure, 8′ ceilings w 3 skylights on the exterior side of the room, large room.) TIA!

  12. Hi i love the color combo of the white dove with the deeper doors and the coordinating staircase baluster post… can u share what the door color and the post color is? Thanks!

    1. Ahhh, that must be the photo with BM Revere Pewter 50% darkened 🙂 That’s my own home and I have Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze on the railings!

  13. Hi Kylie. Love your paint color reviews. My factory painted kitchen cabinets are similar to White Dove. My backsplash is pale blue glass subway tile and my countertop is a warm, white quartz that reads gray. My trim is SW Extra White, and I don’t want to paint it. The kitchen/great room gets Southern exposure. Can I use White Dove on my walls? Or should I go with something like SW City Loft on walls?

  14. HI Kylie, like so many others here I stumbled on your blog when trying to navigate the crazy world of white and off white paints. i love white dove but a tad bit concerned it might be too dark in the room I’m considering. Do you ever advocate for asking the paint store to do like 75% strength of a color, or do you recommend in general just finding another color that full strength achieves was you want? i have done this in the past and been happy but not sure I’m looking for trouble since I won’t really know what I’ll be getting until I’m already painting. Do you have any thoughts on tweaking colors this way?
    Thank you!

    1. Hey Ilene, HECK YES! I did White Dove 25% lighter on the walls/trims of a home and MADLY LOVE IT. Some whites can’t be adjusted as the undertones change too much or disappear, but White Dove handles it quite nicely!

  15. Thanks for all the great advice! We always turn to your website when we’re starting a new project. Your blogs make color suggestions for walls and trim but not ceilings. How do you chose a ceiling color? Is there a standard color you use for ceilings?
    Thanks

  16. Love your blog. I’ve followed it while building my home. I am looking to paint my exterior in White Dove but cannot because the LRV is too high and our architectural review board only allows paints between 10-80 LRV. Can you suggest a color as close to White Dove with an LRV of 80 or below?

  17. Oh wow, was this ever helpful! I currently have my north facing library with wedding veil and it has funeral vibes. I’m planing to use that space as my counselling office and I’m so happy to find your site – I’m white doving the hell out of that room asap. Thanks!!

    1. What a great comment to get, thank you Melanie! Having used many counsellors in my life – thank you for the work you do ;).

  18. Excellent! Thanks for the update in ’23. My oldest son moved out and we repainted his bright blue room White Dove, to use as a guest room. We were debating the color of the ceiling/trim, but are gonna go with White Dove there, too. TY!!

  19. Hi Kylie! This is so helpful and informative. I love Revere Pewter on the doors. In the picture you have with the doors and stairway, is White Dove on the walls and trim as well? I want to match it in mine! The trim looks brighter than the walls in the photo. Also, what color is the staircase railings? Is that a dark brown with black iron as well? It’s so beautiful. Thank you so much in advance!!

    1. Hey Annika! That’s actually my own home where I played around with Edgecomb Gray and did it 75% lighter on the walls! The staircase railing is Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze :). I liiiiiked the walls, but found it a bit too non-committal for me so did my walls White Dove instead 🙂

  20. Hi Kylie,
I am enjoying your website with your thoughtful write-ups and colour analysis:)

I am in love with the picture of the kitchen with the dark blue subway tile. Would you kindly tell me what brand and colour of counter, tile, and cabinet colour you used?

    Thank you!
