Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan (HC-81): Undertones, LRV, & Best Uses
Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan is a light, warm tan paint color. It works well on interior walls, especially bedrooms and whole homes.
As a color expert, I look at how LRV, undertones, and temperature affect how a paint color can look on walls, especially as lighting conditions and finishes change from room to room.
Now, as far as tan and beige paint colors go, Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan has been kickin’ it longer than most. However, just because it’s a familiar name that’s been tossed from trend to trend doesn’t mean it’s the best color for your home. It’s vital you do your research, and in that case, you’ve come to the right place.

WHAT TYPE OF COLOR IS BENJAMIN MOORE MANCHESTER TAN?
Manchester Tan is a warm neutral. And because it has the right blend of undertones (which we’ll chat about shortly), it’s a TAN paint color. Of course, if you subscribe to the idea that beige and tan are the same thing, cool beans. In this case, you’ll learn more in the undertones section.

The Best Paint Colors With Golden Oak
Now, while Manchester Tan is a warm paint color, it’s not nearly as strong as many of the other popular warm neutrals, which is one reason why it stays reasonably popular – it’s not a HUGE commitment to color.
If you have a north-facing room, Manchester Tan offers a consistent warmth, without graying out as much as some similar shades can.

As for south-facing rooms, be careful, as southern light, and rooms with western afternoon sun, already look warm – a color like this can tip the scales a bit too far sometimes!
WHAT’S THE LRV OF BENJAMIN MOORE MANCHESTER TAN?
Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan has an LRV of 63.24, meaning it sits nicely in the light range – not too washed out OR weighed down.
Not sure what LRV is? It could save your paint-lovin’ life – read all about it HERE.
With its LRV of almost 64, Manchester Tan holds up reasonably well in a room with above-average natural light. However, like ANY lighter paint color, it will wash out in an overly bright room.

On the other hand, its depth can add body and personality to a darker room without weighing it down too much. This being said, without enough interior lighting, it can look a bit drab.

WHAT ARE MANCHESTER TAN’S UNDERTONES?
While the main undertone of Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan is yellow, it has a wink o’ green hiding deep within. To say it’s passive would be an overstatement; however, pair it with a finish with opposite undertones, and it could show up at the party.
As for its yellow undertone, it’s quite muted and falls back considerably. If you’re nervous about yellow, compare it with similar tan paint colors (which we’ll also do shortly) to see how it settles for you.

WHAT’S THE BEST WHITE TRIM COLOR FOR MANCHESTER TAN?
A few of my favorites for trims and cabinets include…
- Benjamin Moore Cloud White, a super classic warm white
- Benjamin Moore Simply White, for a brighter, cleaner contrast
I wouldn’t partner Manchester with a cold white or one that’s TOO creamy/yellow.
Simply White trim/doors
In this next photo, the white trim (unknown color name) is alllllmost too stark for the subtle warmth of Manchester Tan. It works, but if you’re starting from scratch, a bit of warmth is nicer…
Damn, does this front door ever need a bit of color!

WHAT COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO MANCHESTER TAN?
Every color has its own particular nuances, and there won’t be a perfect match – you’ll see shifts in undertones, temperature, and depths. However, that’s EXACTLY HOW you find your perfect paint color!
BENJAMIN MOORE MANCHESTER TAN VS. MUSLIN
Ahhhh, the battle of the beige…and tan. Comparing these two is an awesome idea.
Why?
Well, when it comes to interior finishes like tiles, countertops, carpets, etc, they more often suit beige undertones (orange) over tan ones (yellow). So, comparing these two, you might find the better option… or not!

Ignore the white paper on the cabinet; Muslin is the sample on the wall
Starting with undertones, Muslin has a reasonably balanced beige undertone, so it doesn’t cater hard to orange-yellow or orange-pink. This is different from Manchester Tan’s yellow-green undertone.

As for depth, with an LRV of 66.54, Muslin is lighter than Manchester Tan and offers a softer approach.

BENJAMIN MOORE MANCHESTER TAN VS. SHERWIN WILLIAMS NATURAL TAN
When it comes to popularity, these two have a lot to say – they just speak for different brands.

Starting with undertones, while Natural Tan is a tan paint color, it’s intensely muted and has more gray. Compared to the warmth and undertones of Manchester Tan, it seems almost grayish…but it’s not.

As for depth, Natural Tan has an LRV of 65, so it’s a bit darker than Muslin, but still a good dose lighter than Manchester Tan.
DOES MANCHESTER TAN GO WITH WOOD FINISHES?
Whether you have wood trims, cabinets, flooring, or furniture, this gorgeous tan paint color can be an interesting partner to a range of stains.

Here it is looking beautiful against an oak floor with a gray-purple undertone/gray wash….

DOES IT GO WITH CREAM TRIM & CABINETS?
Sometimes. It GREATLY depends on your exact shade of cream and whether it has glazing on it (and what color/undertone the glaze has). Sample carefully, as some cream cabinets and trims are too rich and yellow for Manchester Tan.

WHAT COLORS GO WITH MANCHESTER TAN?
When it comes to pairing up paint colors, it depends on what you need them for – adoining walls, adjoining rooms, accent doors, or feature walls? Regardless, these colors should get you started…

Manchester Tan is in the bedroom, and the bathroom is a beautiful blue-green paint color.
- A wide range of medium-depth, cool earth-tones can look gorgeous. In particular, some of my favorites are darker blue-gray-green blends.
- It looks fabulous with earthy hues like darker green paint color and some sage greens.
- Warm whites are gorgeous with Man. Tan.
- Light to medium greiges can be gorgeous, as well as darker shades of greige.
- If you want some drama, check out darker, muted brown paint colors or even a soft black like Sherwin Williams Iron Ore.
- Some cream paint colors can look good in adjoining rooms, as long as they’re muted.

I think Manchester Tan would be perfect for my living room and dining room. However, I have trim and window shutters that are painted SW Alabaster and cannot be changed.
Would Manchester Tan walls work with my Alabaster trim?
Thanks!
I see NO problem with this at all, Renee!
hi!! Was painting my north facing (but adequately lit ) living room accessible beige or modern gray. We have a warm white trim though. which works better in your opinion? also, the living room opens up into the dining room which is light french grey so I want them to coordinate obviously (literally drowning in paint samples!)
I have Manchester Tan on my kitchen wall and I am looking for a light creamy Yellow for cabinets and trim. What can anyone recommend. I have Butter Rum laminate countertop with a stone pattern floor.
Patricia, I’m not an expert but I have used SW Creamy on my trim & cabinets with Manchester Tan.
Can I increase Manchester tan by 50% more color and how would it look
I have sherwin camelback on my walls right now and thinking of a change
You can definitely try! 50% sounds like a lot, and while it’s noticeable, it’s not SUPER drastic. I can’t say how it will look though as I’ve never tried it! I would imagine a touch more green undertone ‘might’ pop up.
Would you recommend Manchester tan with natural hickory flooring? As the flooring has aged, it has developed more pink and yellow tones. If not, do you have a suggestion for a warm paint color that would go well with natural hickory flooring? Thanks!
Absent using Kyle for detailed review and color selection, I’ve wasted countless hours researching paint colors and buying sample jars when sheets weren’t available. This old house has Behr Antique White interior doors, baseboards & new OffW shutters throughout. Not an option to change. A recent kitchen job has SW Alabaster cabinets (& in the hallway). Natural brown/beige stone surrounds the fireplace, etc. SW Natural Tan seemed to exude pink undertones making the AW look more yellow. W/limited choices, I went w/BM Manchester Tan. It seems to be the perfect “meet in the middle” color that does not reflect pink or overly yellow undertones & gets along with the AW & cabinets.
Hey Maggie (great name by the way, as I named my daughter this!), I’m SO glad you found a happy place with Manchester TAn. It can be hard coordinating with creamier, warmer finishes and YOU DID IT!!!! And yes, Behr. They do have some fabulous colors, even if I don’t 100% love their wall paint ;).
Thank you for your comment!
When choosing Manchester Tan and Simply White for walls/trim,
what do you recommend for ceiling color?
Hi Diane, I’d lean into Simply White for flow :).
Hi Kylie. Love your site and all the advice. We are repainting our upstairs and was wondering if Manchester Tan and White dove would be a good colour combination on walls. Main living room and dining room all in one and northerly facing. Lots of windows for good light.
I want colours that are light but warm.
Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, I think this sounds awesome – great combo! Check out Cloud White and Simply White, too 🙂
Would like your opinion using Manchester Tan on the walls, Simply White on the trim and a slightly darker color such Stone Hearth on the doors with black knobs and hinges?
I like Manchester Tan and Simply White, but I would leave Stone Hearth out 🙂
