Sherwin Williams Gossamer Veil (9165): Undertones, LRV, & Real-Home Results

Sherwin Williams Gossamer Veil is a light, warm gray paint color. It works well on interior walls, especially in open-concept spaces, as well as on cabinets.

A room’s exposure can have a noticeable impact on the appearance of a gray like Gossamer Veil, especially in north- or south-facing rooms.

Gossamer Veil is a relative newcomer to the paint scene and is slowly gaining in popularity. Since trends are leaning warmer and away from gray, it’s definitely got its work cut out for it. But all the same, this gorgeous shade has made its mark in many homes!

WHAT TYPE OF COLOR IS GOSSAMER VEIL?

Gossamer Veil is a warm gray. While it desperately tries to be a greige (a warm gray with more beige), it doesn’t quite get there, although it picks up a greige look with the right lighting!

In south or west-facing afternoon light, Gossamer Veil might lean into its warmth, looking more like a greige paint color.

Now, check it out in this dining room…

Gossamer Veil leans much more into its gray roots, all while having a subtle green hue.

WHAT’S THE LRV OF GOSSAMER VEIL?

Gossamer Veil has an LRV of 62, making it a standard light-depth paint color. When unsure which depth to start with, LRVs between 60 and 70 are a great way to get the ball rolling for the average room. From there, you can adjust as needed.

With an LRV of 62, Gossamer Veil will hold itself well in a room with reasonable light without washing out too much. However, at 62, it can be a touch heavy for a dark hallway or north-facing room without enough natural light.

WHAT ARE GOSSAMER VEIL’S UNDERTONES?

Any gray paint color will have blue, green, or purple undertones—warm grays included. While they might favor one undertone, given encouragement, they can flash into the others. Gossamer Veil favors a green undertone, reasonably so, but I’ve seen it flash slightly into the others (a slight purple usually), but not with 100% commitment.

WHY ISN’T GOSSAMER VEIL POPULAR?

Gossamer Veil hasn’t been around long enough to become a top contender. I mean, it’s a bit unpredictable with its undertones, and green isn’t always a preferred undertone at that, but overall, it’s a beautiful color, and I think it’ll rise in the ranks…a bit. However, there will always be more flexible shades to explore.

What are the BEST True Gray Paint Colors with NO UNDERTONES?

WHAT WHITE TRIM COLORS GO WITH GOSSAMER VEIL?

Being a warm gray, Gossamer Veil is really quite flexible. A few of my favorites include…

DOES GOSSAMER VEIL LOOK GOOD WITH CREAM TRIM OR CABINETS?

Heck to the no. There’s no world where I would put Gossamer Veil with creamy trim or cabinets. They’re tricky buggers to accommodate, and you’ve got some reading to do.

DOES GOSSAMER VEIL SUIT WOOD TRIMS & CABINETS?

Gossamer Veil can be wicked pretty with a wide range of wood stains. Its subtle green undertone can contrast wood trims, cabinets, and flooring without getting too wild and crazy. That said, if your room is a bit darker, it could look a bit drab if you have wood trim, not white trim – it does love the contrast of white trim to come to life.

The only wood stains I get a bit nervous about with Gossamer Veil are overly pink or pickled ones.

WHAT COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO GOSSAMER VEIL?

Ooooo, that’s always a tough one. You won’t find the same paint color from brand to brand; there will always be shifts in undertones, temperature, and depth. However, comparing similar shades is the best way to find your best shade.

  1. You mentioned BM’s Rodeo. Would love to see you do a color review on it. Trying to decide between Rodeo and BM ‘s Classic Gray..

    1. IT’S DONE NOW! I always backdate them, so they don’t necessarily show up on my homepage, but here it is! https://www.kylieminteriors.ca/paint-colour-review-benjamin-moore-rodeo-1534/
BTW, it’s ALL going to be about whether you want a subtle green undertone and a bit more depth OR an off-white with a subtle purple (purple-pink) undertone. They’re really doing different things, so I would think one SHOULD suit your room more than another, but that depends on your finishes!
      I hope that helps 🙂

  2. Your color reviews are so helpful! I have painted my walls (southwest facing room) in SW Pure White. I really love the color of SW Gossamer Vail on the trim, but it does look a bit washed out when the sun hits. Is there a color that looks like SW Gossamer Vail, but slightly darker? Or should I try darkening SW Gossamer Vail by 25 or 50%? Thanks!

  3. We’ve narrowed our whole home color to Gossamer Veil or Edgecomb Gray. We have, supposedly, Revere Pewter now and I love it but it is a bit dark as our sitting family room is little north light…this part of the house is almost always shadowed. Edgecomb feels a bit yellow. We love Gossamer Veil, but at times it looks too grey. I hope our house won’t feel boring grey and that it’ll be a good neutral to go with brown tables and tan furniture.

Thoughts on Edgecomb vs Gossamer Veil?

    1. Oooo, that’s a TOUGH one. For me, it would be whether I want a green undertone or not. Seeing as you have RP and love it, but are finding it a bit dark, Gossamer still has the green undertone, it’s just a bit more subtle and grayer (and lighter). Edgecomb is that bit warmer which can be nice for northern light. However, of the 2, Edgecomb could likely be better with tan furniture ;).

  4. We painted our open lay out of living room, kitchen and dinning room Gossmer Veil. Dinning area looks amazing but two walls getting the most light in the living area look green. It annoys me so much. Is there a complimentary color to this that I could possibly paint for accent wall?

  5. Would you use Gossamer Veil in a north facing living room that is used throughout the day? With Alabaster on the walls in the adjacent rooms??

    Thank you!

  6. I watched/read countless online paint reviews, I sampled every popular Sherwin Williams greige that exists, and I painted my entire home first Ben Moore Edgecomb Gray (too yellow/beige!) and then Wordly Gray (too brown!), before discovering that Gossamer Veil is the perfect color. Sometimes greige, sometimes gray, but always a calming, balanced, matches-everything tone. I don’t know why there aren’t more photos and reviews online of this incredible paint color, but maybe it’s because you’d never know it’s magic by looking at a color deck. Absolute perfection, and all the magic it’s name implies.

    1. Based on your review above I purchased a sample of Gossamer Veil. I wanted a whole house color but it’s way too dark and gray for me. Our kitchen is exposed to south windows so it gets a decent amount of natural light. When I opened the sample color I thought it looked really nice but after it had dried for a day I knew it wasn’t for me. And I should add that I did the same thing with Agreeable Gray – it is, of course, even darker. I think I will try Shoji White or something like it next. I’m just pointing out for other readers that what works in one person’s house won’t necessarily work in yours – that’s probably obvious to most people but since everyone seems to love these two colors I figured I couldn’t go wrong 🙂

  7. Hi Kylie, thank you so much for your helpful posts and videos. I would love your opinion of Gossamer Veil as a primary home paint color with Westhighland White trim and kitchen cabinets. We have paint accents in Dovetail, Dorian Gray, Mindful Gray, and Iron Ore. I was considering Repose Gray but I think Gossamer Gray might look better with the rest of the colors. Thank you for your time!

    1. Hmmmm, Gossamer Veil and its subtle green undertone can be a BIT limiting – but very pretty for sure. Because it has a green undertone, you’ll ALWAYS have to answer to that (and I would stay away from Repose Gray as it can be a touch drab/heavy). For this approach, I’m usually more inclined towards SW Agreeable Gray which will suit ALL of your accents. AS for trim, I would shift to SW Pure White or at least BM White Dove, which both have less YELLOW than Westhighland White :). I have White Dove in my own home (as I don’t love a super bright white) and it’s STUNNING!

  8. Hi Kylie! I’m thinking about painting the exterior siding of my home Gossamer Veil. Our windows are vinyl, color match was accessible beige. Will this coordinate together? Lastly, what white do you recommend for the trim/gutters? Pure white was a bit too stark with the window color being beige. THANK YOU!!!

    1. Oooo, I wouldn’t do this mix, they’ll compete as the house will look lighter and even a bit green compared to the windows!

  9. Thank you, Kylie, you’ve done it again! I love love love your blog and videos!! Question for you…I suddenly have to redo my dated kitchen due to water damage, so I’m taking the opportunity to make some updates. I recently painted the rest of my house SW Alabaster. However I have found Alabaster to be quite limiting when choosing pigmented colors to match. Do you think Gossamer Veil would make a good cabinet color against Alabaster walls? (Assuming flex elements match of course.) I do get adequate light from windows on both ends of my galley style kitchen (windows face East and West). Thank you in advance!!

    1. Hey Lisa, thank you!!!

You’re right, Alabaster can be finicky! My first thought is that Gossamer Veil doesn’t really have the depth to stand up to the subtle warmth of Alabaster. Now, of course, it ALLLLL depends on your countertop and backsplash at the end of the day, but what aobut shifting into a bit more greige and a bit more depth, ie. SW Amazing Gray??? or MAYBE Colonnade Gray. 🙂

  10. Do you have any recommendations on dark greens that go well with Gossamer Veil? We are looking to do our built-ins in a dark green with the walls gossamer. We were looking at Night Owl and Rosemary as options.
    Thanks!

  11. I had never heard of this color until now! We are considering it for our great room (700 sq feet kitchen/ dining/living area south facing with tons of windows in sunny California) but our kitchen cabinets are a medium chocolate earthy brown. I’m afraid the warmth in the wood may pull out the green in this too much, which I dont think will happen with agreeable gray. Thoughts?

  12. We painted our kitchen Gossamer Veil and I love it. We have a fairly open floor plan. Our family room has windows at both ends of the room, which are north and south. How do you think Gossamer Veil will do in that type of light? If I don’t use Gossamer Veil, is there a coordinating color that works with it?

  13. We are re doing our kitchen and having Irish cream cabinets installed with white counter tops and slight gray marbleling
Would Gossamer veil drift of mist work
    Anew gray or mega greige
    Thank you
Any ideas would be much appreciated

  14. We have a lake home with a south view and east view. My furniture is taupe velvet. I thought drift of mist would work but it’s too gray. Then I found modern gray and gossamer veil. I thought one of those. Then I went to my old favorite agreeable gray. I just want to make sure with my top couch that I’m not pulling pink. What is your opinion of which one I may should be looking at as a front runner?

  15. Hello! Our house faces Southeast without much natural light. Would Gossamer look good in our foyer and common areas?
Other colors we have are: SW Aloof gray in LR and kitchen with Whitetail cabinets and Snowbound on all trim/doors and ceilings.
DR has a feature wall in Behr Nocturnal Blue. Opinion on Gossamer with what we have?

  16. Hello! how would you say SW Gossamer Veil compares to BM Collingwood? They look very similar on the screen but do you think they’re similar in person? Currently renovating our south-facing kitchen and looking for a light and airy but neutral, not white, color that feels fresh and crisp and sophisticated. I love Collingwood but our contractor wants us to use SW.

    1. Hey Jamie, there’s a good difference between the two! You’ll find that SW Agreeable Gray is MOST like Collingwood (slightly less violet, which means it can look a ‘touch’ more green, in comparison).

As for GV and Collingwood, GV has a more noticeable green undertone! If you compare them in person, Collingwood’s violet will be more noticeable 🙂
