Sherwin Williams Grizzle Gray: LRV, Undertones and a Little More
If you’ve been looking for a dark gray paint colour with a little more LOVE in it, you’ve come to the right place as today we’re diving deep into Grizzle Gray.
I love to show RELATEABLE & REAL homes, so ONLY use photos from my Online Colour Consulting clients. This means I don’t always have the quality pics I need (hence the ‘QUICK Review’), but DEFINITELY have some SUPER helpful info to help you on your way!
What type of paint colour is Grizzle Gray? Is it warm or cool?
Grizzle Gray is a considerably DARK gray paint colour. At this depth, paint colours are often referred to as ‘charcoal’.
You’ll also find that while Grizzle Gray is a COOL paint colour, it has more undertone/colour to it than the average gray (more on that below), which is why it’s SO important to sample it properly in your room!
What’s the LRV of Grizzle Gray?
Grizzle Gray has an LRV of 13, so there’s no messin’ around with this bad boy! He’s got some serious meat on his bones, sitting in the medium-dark range (learn more HERE).
Not sure what LRV is? It could save your paint lovin’ life – read all about it HERE.
What are the undertones of Grizzle Gray? Will it look green?
Grizzle Gray can definitely look green, as that’s its dominant undertone. However, it’s a COOL green, so a green-blue, which takes Grizzle Gray away from the more olive-toned and warmer gray-green blends.
What’s the best way to sample Grizzle Gray?
Like with every paint colour, I highly recommend using SAMPLIZE. Samplize is a peel & stick paint sample that you can easily move around your room for over HALF THE COST of traditional sample pots – and they deliver right to your front door!

If I’m painting my walls Grizzle Gray, what’s the best white paint colour for my trim?
Grizzle Gray is pretty flexible, but if I’m starting from scratch with my paint palette, I’ll probably choose Sherwin Williams High Reflective White, just for its general ‘white’ look.
Is Grizzle Gray a good colour for the exterior of my home?
Grizzle Gray can be an AWESOME exterior paint colour, whether it’s for the siding, gables or front door! Just make sure your roof, stone and other exterior features can visually support the green undertone.

You won’t find an exact match for ANY colour between brands – you WILL see shifts in undertones, temperature and depths. And while I WISH Benjamin Moore had options that held up to the beauty of Gauntlet Gray, there are some with similar intentions, but different approaches…
And if you’re thinking of colour matching between brands (ie: getting BM to make an SW paint colour), you might want to read THIS first.
