The 12 Best Medium-Dark Green Paint Colors: Sherwin Williams

Popular Shades To Make Your Friends GREEN With Envy!

According to Kermit the Frog, it’s not easy being green. However, if you’re one of the top trends on walls and cabinets, I’d say it’s not hard at all!

Green is having its moment. Maybe it started with Sherwin Williams’ Color of the Year for 2022—Evergreen Fog (which is still MASSIVELY popular). Or maybe we’re all ready for a departure from gray and are entertaining colors with depth and personality.

This is why we’re stepping away from the wild world of neutrals to explore my favorite green paint colors from Sherwin Williams (you’ll find Benjamin Moore’s best green paint colors HERE and linked at the end, too).

But first…

THE BEST PLACES TO USE GREEN

While we haven’t seen an explosion of green exteriors (not every exterior can handle green), darker shades of green are popping up on kitchen cabinets, islands, and bathroom vanities.

Let’s explore a few of the most popular places to add a little green to your life…

Dark green painted cabinets in office similar to Sherwin Williams Thunder Gray (1)

GREENS FOR KITCHEN CABINETS & ISLANDS

Dark greens like Sherwin Williams Ripe Olive and Thunder Gray (which we’ll talk about shortly) are just the beginning of the green brigade. These dark, glorious greens, bathed in forest-inspired moodiness, are showing up in more kitchens and even more on kitchen islands.

Green UNDERTONES are also a huge hit, especially greige paint colors like Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze

Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze Island

However, some of the most popular shades of green are closer to the medium depths—colors like Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog and Pewter Green (linked below).

While not many have embraced the hunter-greens of the 1990s, a few more traditional greens are sneaking in the back door like teenagers past curfew, hoping they don’t get caught.

SHADES OF GREEN FOR LAUNDRY ROOM CABINETS

My Online Paint Color Consulting clients also have a lot of green-inspired fun in their laundry rooms, specifically on the cabinets.

It’s easier to get a little wild and crazy in the laundry room, as it’s usually a smaller project than a kitchen. This means it’s an easier DIY and more manageable to change should you get tired of green in a few years.

POPULAR GREENS FOR ROOMS, ACCENT WALLS & COLOR DRENCHING

There’s a lot of demand for green on ACCENT WALLS, of which I’m a huge fan (I mean, I am known to blow a lot of hot air around).

Haven’t accent walls gone the way of rectal thermometers – fun to use, but a bit outdated?

Yup – the wrong color in the wrong place is the wrong choice! However, a well-placed, well-chosen accent color can make or break a room.

However, green really takes over when it comes to color-drenching, where an entire room—walls, trims, and ceilings—is painted a single color.

Would I COLOR DRENCH a room?

You bet your cute little booty I would, but only if the walls, trims, and ceilings are white or off-white. I’m not into color-drenching with darker shades, but I can still appreciate the beauty of this approach.

Now, before we get into the real good stuff, let’s chat about the TYPES of greens…

THE THREE TYPES OF GREEN PAINT COLORS

Not all greens are created equal. In fact, there are three types of greens.

1. WARM OR EARTHY GREEN PAINT COLORS

Warm green paint colors are green-yellow. This yellow can be so subtle that it doesn’t show up at the party, or so obvious that you feel like you’re swimming in a vat of olives (you’re NOT going to smell good).

Subtly warm greens are popular, but the stronger green-yellows are still sitting on the pool deck, politely dipping their toes in the fermented water.

2. COOL GREEN PAINT COLORS

We see most of the popular shades in the cool green world. What makes green cool is when mixed with blue—either a little or a lot. Green-blue blends are popular in the light to medium range, but as these colors get darker, trends lean toward colors that are considerably more green than blue.

If you blend enough blue into green, you get a tantalizing and titillating shade of teal!

3. NEUTRAL GREEN PAINT COLORS

Of course, some greens don’t favor yellow or blue – they’re pretty darn green or close to it. These greens are subject to their environment (like any color) and can look a bit cooler (green-blue) in northern light or a bit warmer (green-yellow) in southern or strong afternoon western sunshine.

Of course, there are varying degrees of intensity. Some greens are green-gray and more muted, and others are positively GLOWING in their greenness.

Ultimately, it comes down to which one best suits you and your home—let’s find out!

1. SHERWIN WILLIAMS PEWTER GREEN 6208

Make no boners about it, Pewter Green is destined to be one of the most popular shades of green. With its low LRV 12 and subtle gray backdrop, Pewter Green says EVERYTHING that green needs to without feeling like you’ve been smacked in the face by a frozen Shamrock.

Pewter Green also makes for a dramatic accent wall, winking seductively at Hunter Green without looking 1990s.

While I wouldn’t say Pewter Green is a popular exterior paint color, it can work. It’s shown on the garage door of this next home. I would typically use it on the outside or inside of the front door rather than a garage door, but it depends on the house and its owner’s tastes!

2. SHERWIN WILLIAMS SECRET GARDEN 6181

Secret Garden shouldn’t be a secret with its stunningly good looks. I love it so much that I used it in the bathroom at our lake home…

Small bathroom, beige greige tile floor, wood vanity, white quartz, green shiplap wall Shade Grown Sherwin and White Dove

The above bathroom was also easy on the budget; however, I chose the vanity for its looks, not its functionality (the same reasons Tim chose me).

I wish I’d chosen one with drawers (another reason Tim chose me – no drawers, wink wink), but since it’s like a bonus guest bathroom, my GSL was low (give a…factor). Instead, I wish I’d chosen one more like this or this one, which at least has an open shelf for towels or a basket of TP.

Anyway, enough about ME, let’s get back to you!

Secret Garden is a bit warmer and more olive-inspired than many other greens on this page, but it doesn’t look like a legit olive-toned paint color. Although it’s darker with its LRV of 8, its stronger green hue stands out.

COLORS THAT ARE SIMILAR TO SECRET GARDEN

One of the most important parts of finding your best paint color is comparing similar shades, such as…

  • Sherwin Williams Oakmoss offers a similar color with a lighter approach.
  • Benjamin Moore’s Jade Romanesque has a similar color profile but is more greige (so it’s more neutral and calmer).

3. SHERWIN WILLIAMS BASIL 6194

Basil isn’t just good for pasta and soups (not that I’d know – the kitchen I do NOT get along with); it’s great on islands, too!

As shown in this beautiful kitchen, Basil is a stronger, punchier approach to green without being as colorful and saturated as Isle of Pines (coming up shortly).

Basil is a cool green—there’s not an inch of olive inspiration in this bad boy. With an LRV of 15, Basil holds up well in a dark room, meaning its degree of color will still show up.

Some greens are so unique they’re hard to compete with! I was hoping for a few more options, but these two will have to do…

4. SHERWIN WILLIAMS EVERGREEN FOG

Although Evergreen Fog was the Color of the Year in 2022, it’s still a popular choice. I love it so much that I used it as an accent wall in the guest bedroom at our lake home.

And look at how friggin’ STUNNING Evergreen Fog looks on this shiplap accent wall with the lovely warm, soft white look of Sherwin Williams Alabaster on the white finishes…

The awesome thing about using a color like green on an accent or feature wall is that when trends or personal tastes shift, it’s an easier change than having to paint an entire room.

And don’t worry whether feature walls are trendy or not; the right color in the right spot is ALWAYS at home.

5. SHERWIN WILLIAMS RIPE OLIVE 6209

Ripe Olive is a dark green with an LRV of 6. However, even though it’s killer dark, this doesn’t make it black-green; a good whack of green still shows up at the party.

Being one of the darkest shades of green, you won’t fully appreciate the beauty of Ripe Olive in a dark space; it needs light to come alive. Sure, you’ll see its color more than you will a darker green-gray like Grizzle Gray, but color needs LIGHT to come to LIFE!

This is a rendering of what I’d like to do to my kitchen – sadly, I have a husband.

Ripe Olive and Shade Grown (previously mentioned) are often in the running for the same project and are on point with today’s green-inspired trends. While these two are similar in their intentions, Ripe Olive is darker, with an LRV of 6, compared to Shade Grown’s 8. Ripe Olive also looks a touch more green/saturated compared to Shade Grown.

6. SHERWIN WILLIAMS RETREAT 6207

Retreat sits in the slightly cool end of the green world. Along with its subtle blue undertone, Retreat has a healthy dollop of gray, slowing it down.

Dark green paint color in moody den.

Retreat is a popular shade of green for cabinets and exteriors. Because it’s a bit more muted in its approach (a bit grayer than some other greens), Retreat is also a hit for entire rooms—not just accent walls.

7. SHERWIN WILLIAMS ISLE OF PINES

If you’re pining for a more intense shade of green, look no further than Isle of Pines. While it’s a cool green hue, Isle of Pines is a slightly hunter-inspired green with a traditional vibe.

Kylie M Interiors Edesign, powder room, small bathroom with gray hexagon tile floor and green painted vanity with gold accents. Sherwin Williams Pure White. Online paint colour advice and blog

Of the options on this page, Isle of Pines is the closest to a more traditional-looking hunter green. With its LRV of 8, Isle of Pines is in the dark range, but its degree of color lifts it up, making it look a bit more moderate.

And yes, I did think about changing the place of the vowels in the word PINES – you’re welcome.

8. SHERWIN WILLIAMS DRIED THYME

If you want a bit more color on your walls without going too far, Dried Thyme is the most beautiful shade of green. Compared to some others, Dried Thyme is more committed to its hue, with only a modest amount of gray calming it down.

Best green paint color, Sherwin Williams Dried Thyme in small walk in pantry with White Dove cabinets, floating shelf, Omnia Quartz Monterey

Dried Thyme is also one of the lighter options on this page with an LRV of 21, making it a solid medium-depth shade of green. If you have a dark room (like the pantry shown above), Dried Thyme has enough color to show up without overwhelming a small space like this. If you have a brighter room, Dried Thyme will be in its glory!

WHAT COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO DRIED THYME?

It’s really hard to match the perfection of Dried Thyme, but it’s through comparison that you find your BEST shade, so let’s see what we’ve got…

  • Sherwin Williams Retreat (a touch grayer-cooler)
  • Benjamin Moore’s Secret Path (a wink lighter and greener)
  • Benjamin Moore Jojoba (a bit warmer/lighter)
  • Benjamin Moore Avon Green (quite similar)

9. SHERWIN WILLIAMS ROSEMARY 6187

With its LRV of 14, Rosemary is darker than Dried Thyme. When you compare it to other colors on this page, you’ll see a bit more green than some. However, compared to a more intense shade like Isle of Pines, Rosemary is quite calm without being overly dull.

10. SHERWIN WILLIAMS NIGHT OWL

Sitting in the medium-dark end with an LRV of 13, Night Owl is more of a green-gray than a green. So, if you want the look of green without 100% commitment to COLOR, Night Owl could be your color (you could also explore Grizzle Gray.)

11. SHERWIN WILLIAMS ROCK BOTTOM 7062

If you’ve hit Rock Bottom in your search for the perfect green, let me introduce you to a friend of mine—Rock Bottom. Rock Bottom isn’t messing around. With an LRV of 7, it’s a reasonably dark shade of green with a grounded gray base to slow it down.

Look at how gorgeous everything looks in this color-drenched home office (except the ceiling). Bookshelves can look cluttered with the different spines showing, but with the floating shelves painted the same as the walls, the look is way more boutique.

12. SHERWIN WILLIAMS SHADE GROWN 6188

Shade Grown is one of my favorite shades of green, thanks to its deep, sultry hue. Shade Grown is popular because it doesn’t come off as terribly warm or cold-looking and has a depth that really speaks to current green-inspired trends.

WHICH GREEN PAINT COLOR IS THE MOST POPULAR?

When it comes to Sherwin Williams, Evergreen Fog is at the top of the list. While Dried Thyme makes a run at the title, Evergreen Fog takes one of the top spots.

WHAT COLOR OR TYPE OF GREEN IS TRENDING RIGHT NOW?

It’s interesting, as while some decades catered to certain types of greens (e.g. Hunter Green from the 1990s), right now, a wide range of greens are in style. For example…

ROOMS: Color-drenching is popular, in which case, darker shades of warm and cool green are hot

CABINETS: When it comes to painted kitchen cabinets, DARK greens are the most popular. And while some are slightly warm, more are more moderate/balanced, like Sherwin Williams Pewter Green.

UPCOMING: Apparently, dill green paint colors are gaining in popularity – whooda thunk it.

EXTERIORS: Green is becoming an exterior trend, especially in the medium depths with colors like Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog and Benjamin Moore October Mist

  1. I loved Pewter Green so much that I put it on two different sets of cabinets in a satin finish, with different exposures (south vs. north). It’s lighter in the south-facing room of course, but even in my well-lit north-facing kitchen it clearly shows as a muted green (clearly more green than gray, compared to your accent wall shot).

  2. Such helpful info! For our exterior paint project, I tried many of the colors you covered here and in your other posts. It is so interesting to see how colors perform in real life, and with the massive number of light variations outside. We ended up choosing SW Rosemary. We used BM paint, and nothing BM had was close so we color matched. It looks amazing! Thank you so much!!

  3. Love all the ideas for green paint. What would you suggest if your walls are Accessible Beige and cabinets are SW Alabaster? Dried Thyme was suggested by SW.

  4. I have SW Drift of Mist walls with Pure White trim. I’m thinking of doing an accent wall in Dried Thyme. Do you think this would go together? It’s a relatively dark room.

  5. Hi Kyle, your site is beyond helpful for choosing and learning about paint colors, thank you so much! We are redoing our kitchen and are doing white cabinets on the walls (SW Pure White or SW Alabaster) and hoping to do a pop of green on the cabinets of our island and our pantry. We are between SW Evergreen Fog and SW Dried Thyme, do you have any suggestion between the two?!

    1. Oooo, first up, without seeing your space, i TRUST Pure White more than Alabaster, just because Alabaster has more yellow in it (but if that’s what your space needs, that’s okay!). As for the two greens, it can depend on your lighting/surroundings, but because the sheen of cabinet paint can make a color look a BIT lighter than expected (especially if your room is well lit), I lean into Dried Thyme.

I would LOVE TO SEE IT ALL DONE, PLEASE SEND PICS!!

  6. I’m not a fan or blues or grays, but I love some bright pinkish reds, such as BM Milano Red, BM Spring Tulips, or BM Red Tulips. What trim colors go with those, please.
Also, what trim colors would you suggest with BM Fernwood Green, BM Misted Fern, or BM Soft Fern?
What blue-violet do you recommend? Thank you.

  7. LOVE YOUR BLOG! So incredibly helpful. I’m working with a super creamy antique white glazed cabinet in my new home’s kitchen with cream trim everywhere, gack! . I tried Evergreen Fog but feel it is looking a bit more blueish/green than what I had in mind. Would you suggest a darker green for cream glazed cabinets? I was thinking of trying Dried Thyme or Pewter Green. HELP! TIA!

  8. Hi! I love both cabinet colors and wall color in your second photo on this page. Can you tell me what those 3 colors are? Thank you!

  9. Love all these colors ! I am looking for a medium sage green to go with a darker forest green . Any combination suggestions for this pairing ? Thanks

    1. Oooo, it totally depends on the darker forest green as there are many variations – some with less blue in them, others with more, along with more gray/less gray. Off the top, I might look at something along the lines of SW Coastal Plain?

  10. I love these colors . I love green anyway . I like the picture of the color drenching with green and then it looks like a lighter sage green is used in the adjacent room .
Any suggestions on pairing a lighter to medium sage green with a darker green ?
    Thanks
I have used SW Svelte Sage and BM Nantucket Gray before and liked them .

  11. All these green are so gorgeous, and your advise is always spot on! You absolutely nailed our front door colour on our old house! Because these deep greens are usually on cabinets or as feature walls, what whites or off-whites do you recommend pairing them with? I want to do Ripe Olive in our master bedroom as a feature wall and the rest of the walls a white, but we are north facing in this room so I’m struggling. I want to do Light French Gray or Knitting Needles in the adjoining bathroom and walk-in closet so I think maybe an off-white or warm white that suits both? Does that even exist? I had Greek Villa or White Heron in mind. Pure White is just too cold in this space unfortunately.

  12. Hi Kylie, I love love your blog! Quick question: In the picture of the guest bedroom at your lake house, with the Evergreen Fog shiplap behind the bed, what color are the other walls and ceiling? Thanks wo much!

  13. Gah all such beautiful greens. I am leaning toward Aesthetic White for main area (open concept) and had hopped on your blog for your insightful opinion. In there was a hyper link to your favorite greens… any of these that would pair the best? I thinking medium to darker with some gray? I want to do a feature wall in my living room tv wall. On there is a lovely warm colored console
    TIA 🙂

    1. Hey girl! I agree, they’re all so friggin ‘pretty. If I were to choose RIGHT NOW, without seeing your home…I do love SW Cast Iron and Thunderous which are green, for sure, but have a nice stormy gray backdrop. Grizzle Gray is probably TOO grayish. Pewter Green is lovely, too 🙂

  14. Hi Kylie – your blogs are so helpful! One question – do you know the green color used towards the beginning of your blog under the paragraph section titled “ The Best Places too Use Green”? Thanks so much in advance!

    1. Oh, Sophia, I’d love to tell you, as it’s gorgeous, but it was already on these cabinets! The closest I can eyeball is BM Dark Olive, so at least you have a place to start!
