Sherwin Williams Dried Thyme: Paint Color Review
IT’S ABOUT THYME…
Have you been looking for the best shade of green for your room, cabinets, or even your exterior?
If so, it’s about thyme you looked at Dried Thyme 6186. Not only is it one of Samplize’s Top 40 best-selling colors, but it’s also the 4th most popular green paint color… evah.
So, let’s spend a little quality time together and see if Dried Thyme is the best green hue for you, baby-boo…

All the photos in my blog are from my Online Color Consulting clients, readers, & friends— because real homes deserve to be celebrated (dirty laundry & all!) While not magazine-perfect, they’re packed with ideas & proven color choices to help you create a home you’ll love.
IS DRIED THYME A WARM OR COOL GREEN?
Great question. When choosing the best green for your home, one of the first things to consider is temperature.

WARM GREENS: Greens that lean into yellow. You won’t always see the yellow, but a warm green will have it somewhere in there.
COOL GREENS: Greens that lean into blue. The blue isn’t always noticeable, but if your green is cool-toned, it’s a green blue.
The 3 Types of Green Paint Colors & How to Choose
And to answer your question, Dried Thyme can come across a bit cool (being a slightly cool shade of green, but in the wild world of greens, it usually looks pretty darn balanced.
This lack of REAL commitment to temperature is one reason Dried Thyme is so popular!
WHAT’S THE LRV OF DRIED THYME?
Dried Thyme has an LRV of 21, placing it at the lower end of the medium depths.
A green with this depth is popular on accent walls, kitchen cabinets and islands, exteriors, and even entire rooms.

WHAT’S THE BEST WHITE TRIM WITH DRIED THYME?
Ooo, now you’re pushing your luck (wink wink). Just joking, I’ll give you the goods.
Dried Thyme is friggin’ fabulous with a ton of white paint colors, starting with…
- Sherwin Williams Pure White for a simple, balanced approach.
- Sherwin Williams Alabaster offers a pretty softness and warmth to play with Dried Thyme’s green hue.
- Benjamin Moore White Dove is great because it falls between the temperatures of Pure White and Alabaster.
And SO much more, that’s just a shortlist.

WHAT COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO DRIED THYME?
This is the fun part! I love comparing similar shades, as doing so, helps me land on the perfect color for my space.
DRIED THYME VS. SHERWIN WILLIAMS BASIL 6194
When comparing these two popular shades of green, there are some easy wins that should help you decide which is best for your walls, cabinets, or exterior.

Depth-wise, Dried Thyme has an LRV of 21. Basil has an LRV of 15, making it a good chonk (technical term) darker.
As for their commitment to green, you’ll notice that Basil has NO commitment issues when it comes to color. You can expect a color-forward approach when working with Basil. And while Dried Thyme ain’t messin’ either, Basil has less gray, making its color a bit bossier.

Notice how the green pops against the red-stained cabinets – just as we talked about earlier! I love when a plan comes together (A-Team – and yes, I did just date myself).
For the average painting project, I’m far more likely to choose Dried Thyme as it says ‘green’ without being overpowering.
DRIED THYME VS. EVERGREEN FOG 9130
I’d say this is the clash of the Titans, but…Evergreen Fog is pretty badass. I love Dried Thyme for a variety of projects, but Evergreen Fog takes the cake.

One reason they often vie for the same painting project is that they’re on the same color strip. Dried Thyme’s LRV of 21 sits a bit darker than Evergreen Fog’s 30, making Evergreen Fog a bit more balanced in terms of depth (the middle of the medium depths).

However, they have a similar approach to ‘green’ as they have a calming gray backdrop. This said, with its added depth, Dried Thyme comes across a bit greener.
If I have to choose between these two shades, nine times out of ten, Evergreen Fog wins.

A FEW MORE COLOR ALTERNATIVES…
Here are a few more shades from Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams to compare with Dried Thyme.
- If Dried Thyme isn’t cool enough for you, take a look at the super popular Sherwin Williams Retreat (here’s its review).
- If you crave more depth, Sherwin Williams Rosemary is wicked pretty.
- Benjamin Moore Jojoba offers a touch more warmth and is a bit lighter.
- Benjamin Moore Avon Green offers a bit more color/less gray.

DOES DRIED THYME GO WITH WOOD CABINETS & TRIMS
Ummm, HECK TO THE YES! Dried Thyme’s glorious green hue is stunning with every wood stain.
- If you love your red-stained wood flooring, cabinets, or trim, Dried Thyme’s green is a beautiful contrast/accent. Any green will contrast red wood, so be careful how much you commit to!
- Dried Thyme also looks beautiful and organic with wood stains that have a more yellow or golden oak look.
- Heck, even if you have gray or whitewashed woods, Dried Thyme can be an interesting, playful partner.
HOW ABOUT CREAM CABINETS & TRIMS?
This is a tough one. Some cream cabinets and trims are more muted and modern, making Dried Thyme a beautiful choice (knowing it will highlight the warmth of your cream cabinets and trims). However, traditional cream cabinets and trims can be a bit too rich and warm for Dried Thyme.
Is this a bad thing?
Wellllll, it depends on how you look at it, but the green of Dried Thyme and the yellow of many cream colors can REALLY bounce off each other, creating a more colorful combo.
WHAT COLORS GO WITH DRIED THYME?
LET IN THE KRACKENS (I don’t even know what movie that’s from), but that’s how I feel when I think about all of the amazing colors that go with Dried Thyme.
Of course, it depends on whether you’re looking for a wall color partner, a color for an adjoining room, etc., but these colors will get you started…
- Any number of purple paint colors that have a similar degree of gray in their backdrop. I especially love Sherwin Williams Enigma.
- Rich, medium-toned beige-browns like Sherwin-Williams Mudslide create a beautiful, organic palette with Dried Thyme.
- Any number of flexible, warm off-white paint colors.
- Muted shades of cream can be pretty with Dried Thyme.
- Lighter shades of green-gray.

Thank you for the full description of Dried Thyme. It is so helpful to read all of your reviews of the many color choices.
I have white oak hardwood flooring through out my downstairs. There is a wide opening from my kitchen into the living room. Everything is light in the kitchen. I am thinking of having an accent wall with the Dried Thyme in the kitchen and run it into the entire living room. Do you think that will be too much in the living room?
Again, Your detailed reviews and experience is appreciated by many!
Thank You!
Hi Linda, thank you for your note! From what I read, it SOUNDS like Dried Thyme could be quite gorgeous! I mean, I haven’t seen your space to know if it will be ‘too much’, but if you’re worried about that, you could compare it to some green-grays, maybe? https://www.kylieminteriors.ca/the-20-best-green-gray-paint-colors-sherwin-williams/
