The 11 Best Sage Green Paint Colors for Walls
Is sage all the rage? Are we even on the same page?
If you’re looking for some sage advice, literally and figuratively, you’ve come to the right blog. Not only do I have the most popular shades of sage green, but I also have the knowledge to back these bad boys up.
But first, what is sage green?
Sage green is open to interpretation. To start, it’s green with gray in it. However, where it goes from there, well, you do you. Some people love sages that are green-grays leaning slightly blue. Others prefer the warmer side of things with green-grays with a wink of warmth (greige or yellow).
The defining features of sage green are green and gray.

As for depth, not every green-gray qualifies as a sage.
The most popular shades of sage have LRVs between 30-55 (give or take five, depending on your perception).
Once you go above 55, you risk greens that look like light shades of green. Go lower, and you’re in the dark green world, and often lose that moderate sageyness we all love.

And as much as I love hearing myself talk (and type), it’s time to check out these beauties…

1. SHERWIN WILLIAMS OYSTER BAY
Oyster Bay is pretty shuckin’ gorgeous. With an LRV of 44, Oyster Bay has moderate depth without weighing down a room. If you love a more organic, earthy sage green, Oyster Bay will be far too cool-toned for you, as it does hold a reasonable blue-gray. But this is a great place to start if you’re down for a bit more blue than average.

Personally…I find Oyster Bay a bit too blue to hit my perfect sage green hue, but you do you, boo! If this is YOUR type of sage green, you might also explore the later version, Comfort Gray, and the darker Acacia Haze.
2. BENJAMIN MOORE SAYBROOK SAGE HC-114
Saybrook Sage is an awesome color if you want green with a bit of commitment to color…

(Several of these colors are in this blog post!) Pure White | Acacia Haze | Comfort Gray | Evergreen Fog | Chantilly Lace
That being said, while Saybrook Sage is the most green and colorful of the above shades, don’t let it deter you. It SEEMS more colorful compared to considerably grayed-out greens and blue-greens. Sure, make these comparisons, but also judge it based on its appearance alone.
A few great comparisons for Saybrook Sage include Benjamin Moore Croquet and Sherwin Williams Willow Tree (along with several other options on this page).
3. BENJAMIN MOORE AGANTHUS GREEN 472
While I don’t have photos of Aganthus Green in action (please send them in if you use it!), I have to share this beautiful color with you. Aganthus Green sounds like it’s straight out of the Willy Wonka movie and is an awesome representative of sage greens with a bit more meat on their bones and a little gravy, too.

This isn’t to say that Aganthus Green is overwhelmingly colorful by any stretch of the imagination. However, it’s a bit more color-forward than some of this page’s slightly more grayed-out shades.
If you love Aganthus Green, compare it to October Mist (coming up next).
4. BENJAMIN MOORE OCTOBER MIST 1495
Hands down, October Mist is my favorite slightly warm sage green paint color. With a vague warmth (without the typical yellow undertone you might see in other warm greens), it is a gorgeous, muted, organic sage green with a soft gray backdrop that calms it.

Compare October Mist to Aganthus Green and notice the shift from Aganthus, which comes off a touch cooler, to October Mist, which has a bit more of an earthy, warmer backdrop.

5. SHERWIN WILLIAMS AUSTERE GRAY
Austere Gray is the perfect sage green if you love slightly cooler shades with a decent gray backdrop.

As with all sage greens that harbor blue and green, Austere Gray changes its tune from room to room (even wall to wall). Compare the images above and below to see this glorious shift. These photos were taken in the same home!

6. SHERWIN WILLIAMS ACACIA HAZE 9132
Is Acacia Haze a sage green, or just a regular green paint color with a cool blue-gray backdrop? It’s up to you! If you want a slightly cool green with a bit more depth than the average shade of sage (say that three times…), it could hit the spot.

This is because Acacia Haze has an LRV of 32, putting it well into the medium depths. If you ask me, it’s a bit dark and slightly too blue for my usual sage needs, but it can be great for an exterior (as it will look a good dose lighter).
7. SHERWIN WILLIAMS CONTENTED 6191
Touted as Sherwin Williams’ most popular sage green paint color, Contented is one of the best and beautiful approaches to sage green.
With an LRV of 52, Contented hits a sweet spot between being too light and too dark, making it a great option for all of your room’s walls (not just an accent wall). As for its color, Contented definitely comes off as cool, but not drastically so. It’s also color-forward without being remotely overbearing, as its gray base takes a big edge off.
If you dare to go darker, check out Sherwin Williams Coastal Plain. But if you ask this color cowgirl, Coastal Plains’ combo of depth and color makes it look more like ‘good old green’ than sage green.

8. SHERWIN WILLIAMS SOFT SAGE 9647
Soft Sage is a gentle, muted approach to sage green (its name serves it well). Found in the Emerald Designer Edition, Soft Sage has an LRV of 50, so it sits on the higher end of what I think sage looks like.

9. SHERWIN WILLIAMS EVERGREEN FOG 9130
Evergreen Fog is another color that’s VERY open to interpretation. Is it green, is it sage, or does it even matter if it’s the perfect color for your home?

The Best Blue & Green Bedroom Paint Colors
Evergreen Fog has an LRV of 30. While it’s darker than Acacia Haze, because it has less blue, its depth doesn’t put me off as much, meaning I’m more likely to consider it sage…ish (okay, maybe it’s a LITTLE DARK).

While Evergreen Fog might be a bit much for an entire room (unless you have good lighting), it’s an awesome accent wall color and also fabulous for cabinets.

10. SHERWIN WILLIAMS CREATE 9646
If we bump up to an LRV of 60, which pushes my sage-green comfort zone, we land on Sherwin Williams Create. This color is wicked pretty. But is it sage green or just a nice light green-gray? WHO CARES – IT’S PRETTY! Create could be just the shade for you if you want a lighter, softer look.

11. MAGNOLIA SILVERADO SAGE
I never dabble in Magnolia colors, but I had to share this badass beauty with you. Silverado Sage is such a stunner. I’d link to its main page, but because I’m in Canada, Magnolia Home won’t give me access (insert heavy blinking and sighing HERE). However, you can get it at McCormick’s Paints.

The Best Paint Colors for the INSIDE Doors In Your Home!
Silverado Sage has a good depth (technically, it’s called ‘meat on its bones,’ but I like to keep things simple. With an LRV of almost 28, this baddy is on the looooow end of the range, for sure, but offers a beautiful approach to sage.
Did you know you can also get this beautiful color in Chalk Paint? This makes Silverado Sage a great option for painting accent furniture, too.
WHAT COLORS GO BEST WITH SAGE GREEN PAINT COLORS?
Oh boy, where do I even START? While it can depend on each color’s particular depth and intensity (saturation), there’s a wild and wonderful range of colors that look good in a color palette with sage…
- Soft and subtle off-whites like Sherwin Williams Aesthetic White, White Duck, and Shoji White.
- Muted taupes can be interesting if you like the play of green and violet-pink undertones.
- Purple paint colors with similar degrees of gray calming them down (lighter or darker).
- Navy blue can be an interesting partner to sage green, especially with soft warm whites and creamy off-whites.
- Any number of beiges, both lighter and darker can be interesting partners to sage green.
- Muted shades of gray or even warm ones like Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter and Sherwin Williams Colonnade Gray.
Seriously, I could go on and on…and on.

I like Oyster Bay, its LRV of 44 seems like a good balance.
