The Best Light, Sage Green Paint Colors: Soft, Muted, & Calming
When looking for the best sage green paint color, aside from the hue itself, deciding on your color’s depth is the next big choice. Do you want a light, soft, muted sage green? Do you want a sage green with more depth and color? What does that magical green in your mind’s eye look like?
There’s no shortage of light-medium to medium-depth sage paint colors – I’ve blogged about them (link near the end of this blog post). However, when it comes to light shades of sage green, it comes down to perception. Why?

- There’s a line where a sage green paint color is so light that it loses its sage appeal. Instead, it just looks…light green.
- In the light-medium to medium range of sage, more people perceive sage green as being either warm or cool. In the LIGHT RANGE, sage green is more often seen as warm; cooler ones are easily seen as ‘minty’ or blue-green, not sage.
- While darker greens come on much stronger and are more obviously ‘dark green, not sage’. The light sage line is much fainter.
WHAT MAKES SAGE GREEN…SAGE, NOT JUST ‘GREEN’?
So, what makes a color ‘sage’ green, rather than just a ‘light shade of green’? Let’s start by defining sage green as it’s most commonly seen.

If you ask me, this isn’t sage, it’s light green. What do YOU think?
Sage green is a paint color that blends green and gray. It can appear warm or cool.
Sound simple, right? However, that would mean any shade of green and gray is sage, and that’s not true. In fact, the best, most popular sage green paint colors have LRVs lower than 60, meaning they’re closer to the LIGHT-MEDIUM or MEDIUM range.

So, what do we do with all of those light greens that may or may not be sage? WE BLOG ABOUT ‘EM, BABY! Because at the end of the day, you shouldn’t care whether your walls are painted ‘light green’ or ‘sage green’, so long as you love your home.
Now, to get your color journey started, you need to start learning and sampling. One last thing…

While I’ve talked about it before, sage green paint colors tend to be warm-toned, scientifically speaking (you know what a color nerd I am). However, depending on their exact composition, their surroundings (exposure, finishes, etc.), and other factors, they MORE commonly appear cool. It’s weird, I know.
This is why sampling and comparing a range of similar shades in your room is so important! Listen to the wee Ginger, she’s done this a few times.
THE BEST LIGHT TO LIGHT-MEDIUM SAGE GREEN PAINT COLORS
You might explore these colors below and find your vision of ‘the best light sage green paint color’. If not, you know I’ve got your back – you’ll find helpful links near the end.
1. SHERWIN WILLIAMS SEA SALT 6204
Sea Salt is an immensely popular paint color with my clients. Regardless of whether it’s a light green-gray or sage green, it’s a huge hit for single rooms, especially bedrooms and bathrooms.

Depth-wise Sea Salt has an LRV of 63, making it light. It can be a bit washed out for many exteriors and too light for most cabinets, but again, madly popular for walls.
If your ‘best light sage green’ is likely to appear warm-toned, Sea Salt is absolutely not the color for you.
And you can absolutely expect this naughty shade to surprise you; sometimes appearing green-gray, other times surprisingly blue-green…

2. BENJAMIN MOORE GRECIAN GREEN 507
Grecian Green really does satisfy most people’s idea of ‘sage green’; whether it’s the BEST sage green, well, that’s up to you, baby boo.

Grecian Green is more likely to appear sage than the others on this page, because it has a bit more depth. Again, where IS that magical line between light green and sage? That’s up to you.
Grecian Green (mistitled as Grecian Urn above) has an LRV of 53.83, making it a light-medium sage that winks at the light range seductively.

Here’s your large, Peel & Stick sample of Grecian Green (as shown above).
As for temperature, Grecian Green is definitely warm – make no bones (and preferably no boners, either) about it. With a greige-appearing backdrop (at times) and a good dose of color, it’s a great lighter sage green option. And yes, that is how my brain works.
3. SHERWIN WILLIAMS CREATE 9646
If we bump up to an LRV of 60, which pushes my sage-green comfort zone, we land on Sherwin Williams Create. This color is wicked pretty. But is it sage green or just a nice light green-gray? WHO CARES – IT’S PRETTY! Create could be just the shade for you if you want a lighter, softer look.
Being a newish color, I don’t have any images of it, but hopefully will soon!
Here’s your Peel & Stick of Create.

Compare Sea Salt with Create and notice a big difference between their approaches. While their DNA both contain green and yellow, Create appears more organically warm and gentler, whereas Sea Salt almost seems cool.
4. SHERWIN WILLIAMS LIVEABLE GREEN 6176
As you can see, Sherwin Williams has a TON of gorgeous light green paint colors (admittedly, I recommend them to my clients far more often than Benjamin Moore’s options). That includes this one: Liveable Green is a light green or light SAGE green paint color, with an LRV of 61.

If you read Sherwin William’s information on Liveable Green, they state it’s a cool green with a warm yellow-gray undertone.
Ermmm, pardon? So it’s a cool green. But it has a yellow-gray… which is warm. Let’s fix that.
Liveable Green is a warm green paint color (because it contains yellow), which has some gray calming it. While it might appear cool in the odd environment, don’t expect it.

5. SHERWIN WILLIAMS ANCIENT MARBLE 6162
Ancient Marble is a great choice for those seeking a light, warm sage-green paint color. That said, it doesn’t get warmer and lighter than this, as even this is borderline just ‘light green’.
With an LRV of 60, Ancient Marble is in the light range. It has a gorgeously organic warmth that’s FAR less likely to appear greenish-blue than most others. Even in the flatter natural light of this home office, it holds a wink of warmth…

And here it is on a larger scale. As you can see, sage paint colors can be gorgeous accents with a range of wood tones, from the lighter pink-toned flooring to the more cherry-toned desk…

6. BENJAMIN MOORE VALE MIST 1494
Vale Mist is a beauty. Whereas Ancient Marble (coming up next) has a more organic warmth and softer appearance, Vale Mist comes in with a wee willy wink more depth and gray. A color like this can easily ebb and flow in appearnace – sometimes appearing warmer, but other times seeming a bit more moderate, if not sliiiightly cool.
Here’s your Peel & Stick sample of Vale Mist…

Regarding its depth, Vale Mist has an LRV of almost 56, putting it between the light and light-medium worlds.
Now, I’m always on the lookout for gorgeous images of homes. If you use my advice to find your best sage green paint color, I’d love to see some before-and-afters!
7. SHERWIN WILLIAMS GRASSLAND 6163
Again, I’m dabbling in the slightly darker shades of sage (say those last 3 words 3 times…). I want you to see a range. This also shows you some of what you’ll find in the partner blog post (linked shortly).

How to Update Your 2000s Home: THE FULL SERIES
Grassland is a sage-inspired green paint color. Those who love a cooler-appearing sage usually find this color too warm. However, for those who like a moderate approach, it can be the perfect color.
As for depth, its LRV of 50 makes Grassland a light-medium sage green, but on the lighter side of that range.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
For any queries or concerns…
WHAT UNDERTONES DO LIGHT SAGE GREEN PAINT COLORS HAVE?
Regardless of what a paint color’s roots (scientific readings) must suggest, they most often appear in homes with cooler green-blue hues. However, with careful sampling, you can land on one with a warm green (green-yellow) appearance.

Even though I am the Patron Saint of Paint, this image ain’t gospel. Your computer screen AND your perception can affect your opinion/thoughts on the above colors. They’re just a basic visual.
The Best Light Green Paint Colors
ARE THERE DARKER SAGE GREENS?
Abso-friggin’ lutely. In fact, the most popular sage green paint colors aren’t listed above. The usual bunch has more depth, with LRVs below 55.

This includes top names like Benjamin Moore October Mist, Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog, and more.

WHAT WHITE TRIM COLORS GO WITH LIGHT SAGE GREEN WALLS?
It totally depends on the sage you choose and the needs of the other finishes. For a general idea, I often suggest…
- Sherwin Williams Pure White, which is a soft white without too much yellow warmth. In my experience, more yellow/warmth can sit funny with some of the lighter sage shades.
- For a brighter contrast without looking too stark, Sherwin Williams White Snow and Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace are great options.
- You can also look at Benjamin Moore White Dove for more warmth than any of the above, without going too far (for most colors).
WHAT’S THE BEST LIGHT SAGE GREEN PAINT COLOR THAT DOESN’T LOOK MINTY?
As we chatted about above, there’s a fine line between sage green and a light green – potentially one that looks minty.
- Your best shot at avoiding mint is to look at considerably warm sage green paint colors. Sages that don’t commit to their warmth hard enough can very (very) easily appear cool and minty in some conditions.
- Compare a range of samples. That light sage green that looks perfect might reveal its mint tendencies when you compare it to a range of similar shades.
- Aim for an LRV of 65 or lower. While it’s open to perception, green paint colors that look minty are most often in the lighter range – colors with higher LRVs.
Want to see how much a color like Sea Salt can move? Here it is in the BEFORE image of my client’s bathroom…

Sea Salt was the wrong choice given this room’s warm travertine tile and lighting. Maybe okay at first glance, but that tile is very uncomfortable (it told me so).
And here it is in another client’s home, looking much less blue…

Remember, many factors affect how a paint color looks, including a room’s exposure, interior finishes, size, and much more.
Your PERCEPTION affects what a paint color ‘is and isn’t’. Is Sea Salt someone’s version of ‘the perfect light sage green?’ You bet your cute little booty it is. For others, it’s way too cool-looking.
By the way, here’s the color my previous bathroom client chose instead of Sea Salt – this room is breathing a heck of a lot easier…

The Best Warm Neutral Paint Colors that Aren’t Yellow
Of the suggestions in this blog post (which ARE some of the very best light sage greens), focus on colors like BM Grecian Green and SW Ancient Marble. Avoid Sea Salt like the friggin’ plague – many of my ‘blue-sensitive’ clients find it too cool.
