The 6 Most Timeless Kitchen Cabinet Colors
If you want to create that elusive ‘effortless, timeless kitchen design,’ you’ve likely considered a range of countertops, cabinet colors, and backsplashes. Well, you can stop. Creating a timeless, trend-proof kitchen is easy when you know the best foundation pieces, and I’ve got them right here in my hot little hands.
Now, some people fight this, who say, ‘But I don’t LIKE this color or that finish; it’s not timeless for me.’
Fair enough; you don’t have to like it or agree with it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not timeless.
If this is the case, your idea of timelessness is different. For example, many think wood cabinets are timeless (insert awkward whistling HERE). Pretty? Yes. Timeless? No.
Check out these wood cabinets…

Would a fresh wall color, backsplash, and countertop help these cabinets look more up-to-date? 1000%. But they still aren’t timeless.
Same with this kitchen – the wood cabinets are gorgeous…

And while they might appeal to many people, they aren’t traditionally timeless.
Are you ‘reasonably’ safe with oak or maple cabinets with a moderate grain and stain? Yup.
But reasonably safe doesn’t mean timeless. Gray cabinets were reasonably safe ten years ago, as were cream cabinets twenty years ago. Where are they now? They’re covered in paint, and it’s usually white.
WHY WOOD CABINETS AREN’T THE MOST TIMELESS
- The 80s introduced a darker, heavier-grained oak cabinet and trim combo.
- The 90s hit it out of the park with golden oak on cabinets, trims, and floors.
- In the early 2000s, homeowners used a lot of rich, warm, exotic woods – those are LONG GONE.
- There were also a ton of cherry-red woods and dark espresso stains in the 2000s.
- The last decade focused heavily on graywashed woods.
- The previous five years also embraced lighter, more natural woods, especially rift-cut oak.
Short story long, wood trends change every five to ten years (or sooner).

The above kitchen is gorgeous and will look good for many years.
Heck, if you can get ten years out of a kitchen these days, I call that a win.
But if you want a timeless kitchen, you might want to stretch outside your wooden box and explore white cabinets.
Of course, if your personal opinion is that you don’t like white cabinets, I get it – they aren’t everybody’s thing. However, if you’re asking the design world what the most timeless cabinet color is, you’re looking at white, my funny friend. I know, I’m a bossy little Ginger, but this blog post isn’t about ‘creating a home that suits your personal tastes‘; it’s about creating a timeless kitchen design—cool beans?
But did you know you can have the best of both worlds?
If you love wood cabinets but are feeling nervous about what you’ve read, you can create a happy medium with white cabinets and a wood island.

How to Update Oak or Wood Cabinets
This can be a reasonably timeless approach if you choose a moderate GRAIN and STAIN.
At the end of the day (or decade), wood trends come and go. And while white cabinets come and go in popularity, they never go away entirely…because they’re timeless.

In a timeless kitchen, each finish is classic and doesn’t try too hard—its beauty is in its simplicity.
WHAT MAKES A KITCHEN CABINET COLOR TIMELESS?
For this blog post, timeless design covers a few topics…
- It’s likely to look good now and in 20-30 years. So, technically, it’s not ‘timeless,’ but I’d rather err on the side of caution. We could be living on Mars in 30 years.
- While not everyone will love these colors (that’s impossible), they’re the least likely to look dated.
- A timeless kitchen cabinet color can be accommodating should surrounding finishes need to be changed in the coming years.
Are there exceptions to what’s timeless, depending on the style of your home? To a degree, yes.
You might do something entirely different if you have a mid-century modern or a beachy cottage. However, if you have an average home, these tips will be right up its alley.

Moving along, let’s consider Nancy Meyers’ and Beth Rubino’s kitchen design from Something’s Gotta Give. This kitchen is the epitome of timeless style, not just because of the black granite countertops but also the surrounding finishes. And what’s one of the most important finishes in a timeless kitchen? The cabinet color.

THE MOST TIMELESS CABINET COLORS
Creating a timeless kitchen is all in the details—the big and the little ones. While I previously covered the most timeless countertops, this bad boy is about cabinet colors. Sure, there are more details, including the backsplash, door profile, hardware, etc., but a girl can only cover SO MUCH with one bottle of wine in one blog post!
The Top 10 Most Timeless Interior Finishes
When you picture your dream kitchen, do you secretly wish for a glorious shade of cream or a subtle off-white?

I hope not. Cream was hot in the early 2000s and is a huge PITA for the average homeowner because it’s hard to update. As for off-white, it’s trendy…for now.
Or maybe you’re hoping a glorious, stone-inspired shade of taupe, beige, or greige will give you the most timeless look…

And I don’t blame you, as there are some beauties out there. However, aside from the odd home that can carry an atypical color, these colors are here for a good time, not a long time.
Who knows, maybe you think the gray HAS to be near the top of the list…

Don’t get me wrong, some of these will look beautiful for a long time – even past their trend cycle. However, a lot of it comes down to not just the cabinet color but…
- The surrounding finishes. Even a well-intentioned cabinet color can be annihilated by outdated countertops, backsplashes, etc.
- The age of the home. Older homes often achieve a timeless look with atypical colors or colors that are ‘out of the trend cycle.’ However, the average suburban home doesn’t always handle these as well. Why? Because outdated finishes often surround these cabinet colors.
- The STYLING of the space. Everything from the cabinet door profile and hardware to the backsplash and home decor plays a part in how a kitchen is perceived.
Older homes or those with unique personalities can often handle an atypical cabinet color – even if it isn’t trendy.

And now, for the moment of truth – the moment you’ve been waiting for.
WHITE IS THE MOST TIMELESS COLOR FOR KITCHEN CABINETS
Why?
1. A well-chosen white cabinet complements a wide range of trends and styles—it’s not super limiting. This means that if you want to change countertops, wall colors, etc., in years to come, you should have the flexibility to do so.
Of course, if you don’t care about trends, plan to stay in your home forever, and hate white cabinets, you might want to read a different blog post, as you don’t want a traditionally timeless kitchen.

2. White cabinets have the best shot at appealing to the most people (if you’re concerned about resale). Again, you’ll never make EVERYONE happy, but you have the best shot at it with white.
FUN FACT: I have many blog posts about ‘How to Update Oak or Wood Cabinets.’ How many blog posts do I have about updating white cabinets? None. White cabinets don’t have to be updated; it’s more about the finishes around them.

Now, without further ado, let’s check out my favorite, most timeless kitchen cabinet paint colors…
1. BENJAMIN MOORE WHITE DOVE OC-17
Whereas some people prefer warmer, creamier whites and others prefer brighter shades, White Dove is the perfect happy medium. With a soft, passive warmth, it’s classic without the brightness or starkness of a more true white.
From there, it’s about surrounding it with finishes you love. If you aren’t worried about a timeless look for your backsplash or countertop, you might lean into a soft white-on-white design.

Remember, there’s nothing wrong with a 10-15 year lifespan, as long as you don’t have to redo EVERY finish in 10 years!

In a few years, the combination of white on white on white will tell us this kitchen was designed in the early 2020s. Oh, it’ll still be beautiful; it’s just not timeless.
2. BENJAMIN MOORE CHANTILLY LACE OC-65
She’s not just a pretty face. Chantilly Lace is one of the most popular whites for a timeless kitchen. With a simple elegance, Chantilly Lace is a brighter white with a wee wink of softness, stopping it from leaning cold or sharp. Cooler or super bright whites aren’t as timeless, and Chantilly Lace is darn near as close as I would get.

3. SHERWIN WILLIAMS WHITE SNOW
White Snow is very similar to Chantilly Lace and is a great alternative if you want a touch more warmth while still having a brighter shade of white with a higher LRV.

4. SHERWIN WILLIAMS ALABASTER
If you love softer, warmer, creamier whites but understand how whites or off-whites with too much yellow can be limiting, Alabaster is an interesting option. While it’s not as flexible as the previous shades, Alabaster can be a gorgeous, timeless cabinet color.

It’s not as flexible because it has a bit more yellow, making it warmer. I mean, it’s still reasonably flexible, but that extra bit of warmth could hold you back a touch, depending on future trends. For example, Alabaster can be fussy with some lighter, muted shades of gray.

5. BENJAMIN MOORE SIMPLY WHITE
Simply White is a classic, well-known color known for its brightness and versatility. Similar in brightness to Chantilly Lace and White Snow, Simply White is also warm but has the strongest yellow undertone. Is it 100% foolproof? Heck no, nothing is, but it will undoubtedly last you a long time.
This next photo shows green light coming in, but you can still see the warmth and brightness of Simply White…

Paint Color Review of Benjamin Moore Simply White
Would I choose Simply White? Nope, I find it a touch too warm/yellow, but many people love it regardless!
6. SHERWIN WILLIAMS PURE WHITE
Is Pure White the most timeless of the bunch? No. But it’s still an interesting option. This is because the most timeless whites tend to have a touch more warmth. This isn’t to say Pure White can’t work; it’s just not as ‘traditionally and classically timeless’ as the others. This said, if you’re nervous about whites with a yellow undertone but like a bit of softness, Pure White could be the perfect place to land.

How to Update Your 2000s Kitchen: Case Studies
Here’s what makes it timeless…
- Recessed panel door (there are many variations of this that are timeless)
- No exposed hinges
- Subway tile backsplash that more or less blends with the cabinets
- Black granite countertop
Here are a few tweaks that could be made if the goal were to make it timeless (which obviously isn’t everybody’s thing).
- Lighten up the color of the white cabinets and subway tile, so they’re a bit brighter. Right now, they’re a creamy off-white.
- Black granite on the island (the existing one is more from the early 2000s). A butcher block countertop can work as well.
- White paint on the island (matching the main cabinets) or a moderate wood stain.
Of course, there are other details, e.g., hardware, lighting, etc., but these can be more personal choices and don’t make or break whether a kitchen is timeless, as they’re easy enough to change.

I would love to hear about the most timeless range hoods and trends 🙂
That’s a great idea!
I have simply white cabinets and was considering painting my island a greige. Would it be best to leave the island as simply white to keep the timeless appeal?
Yeaaaaah, for most kitchens, ALL white is the most timeless look. I have a non-white island (but my cabinets are also non-white). I would leeean into all the same color, generally, if looking timeless is a concern :).
