Sherwin Williams Popular Gray: LRV, Undertones and a Little More

If you’ve been looking for the most POPULAR gray paint colours, look no further than POPULAR Gray! But, just because it’s popular, doesn’t mean it’s the BEST paint colour for your home, as it has some serious undertone considerations (which we’ll get into shortly).

I love to show RELATEABLE & REAL homes, so ONLY use photos from my Online Colour Consulting clients. This means I don’t always have the quality pics I need (hence the ‘QUICK Review’), but DEFINITELY have some SUPER helpful info to help you on your way!

What type of paint colour is Popular Gray? Is it a warm or cool gray?

Popular Gray is a warm greige paint colour. And it’s a deceiving one because while its name actually has the word ‘gray’ IN in it, it isn’t close to being a ‘true gray’ paint colour. Popular Gray is more of a greige with its particular blend of warmth and undertones and even borders on the edge of taupe (which we’ll get at shortly).

If you want to encourage the grayer side of Popular Gray, put it in a north-facing room or one with east-facing afternoon light. However, put it in a south-facing room or afternoon western light and it will soften and warm right up, winking at the taupe end of things!

What’s the LRV of Popular Gray?

Popular Gray has an LRV of 61, which puts it ALMOST at my most magical LRV number for your home. It also puts it in the ‘light’ range.

Not sure what LRV is? It could save your paint lovin’ life – read all about it HERE.

What are the undertones of Popular Gray? Will it look purple or pink?

Popular Gray is NOT one of the more subtle paint colours re: its undertones and you can expect to see some purple-pink showing up to the party, more so than a more neutral greige like Sherwin Williams Anew Gray. However, it’s more neutral looking than Sherwin Williams Pediment, which is a good comparable.

What’s the best way to sample Popular Gray?

Like with every paint colour, I highly recommend using SAMPLIZE. Samplize is a peel & stick paint sample that you can easily move around your room for over HALF THE COST of traditional sample pots – and they deliver right to your front door!

Is Popular Gray a good colour for the exterior of my home?

Hard to say, as it can really depend on your exterior and its roof, stone, brick, etc…. Generally speaking, you will want to be careful that the undertones don’t show up too obvious, or that you’re at least comfortable with them, which is why I’m usually inclined towards more neutral, safer options.

What Benjamin Moore paint colours are the same as or similar to Popular Gray?

Every colour has its own particular nuances and there will be NO perfect match – you WILL see shifts in undertones, temperature and depths, but you could check out…

And if you’re thinking of colour matching between brands (ie: getting BM to make an SW paint colour), you might want to read THIS first.

Is Popular Gray one of the top greige paint colours right now?

Popular Gray is definitely popular, but I wouldn’t say it’s at the TOP of the list. Generally speaking, its LRV is great, the general colour family (greige) is great, it’s just that Popular Gray has those slightly stronger purple-pink undertones. If you’re a FAN of those undertones, this won’t be a problem, but if you prefer a more subtle approach, it will likely be too much for you!

  1. I also read your most recent post regarding updating beige tile – specifically beige with orange/pink undertones. Would this be a color to consider for that type of tile so it compliments rather than enhances the orange/pink?
