Best Behr Warm Neutral Paint Colors: Beige & Tan Color Expert Picks

Behr paint is one of the best-known paint brands. Known for its accessibility and bang-for-buck. But those aren’t their only claims to fame. Behr also offers some beautiful paint colors, especially in the beige and tan color palette.

Whereas in previous years/decades we were well immersed in the gray and white worlds, many are leaning into the subtle warmth of beige and tan. Whether for walls in a single room, open-concept spaces, or even entire homes, many people have a hankering for warmth.

So, today, we’re exploring some of Behr’s most popular beige and tan paint colors. I’m not a Behr expert. Instead, I’m one of the world’s top paint color experts (#funfact), who’s applying her knowledge to Behr paints.

Color similar to Behr beige and tans, this is Benjamin Moore Natural LInen with neutral stair runner and graywash wood railing

I use images of real homes from my Online Color Consulting clients, friends, and family. Because Benjamin and Sherwin are my main squeeze (Behr is just my side piece), I don’t have many photos of its colors in action.

If you use my advice and use one of these colors – or even sample them, please send photos as they make my blog even more helpful!

WHAT YOU’RE GETTING…

I ain’t no one-tricky pony – you’re getting more than the basics in this blog post.

  • What you might expect to see with these colors (very situational): temperature and general approach to undertones? Undertones are the way a color leans or a natural color bias.
  • What Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams paint colors do they compare to – are there better alternatives?

Now, let’s get this color party started…

1. BEHR’S SPANISH SAND OR-W07

Spanish Sand is one of my favorite beiges from Behr. Some beiges aren’t warm enough for homes built in the early 2000s, as their finishes often need a bit more orange-based warmth. Others lean a bit too greige-taupe.

This is why I love Spanish Sand. This bodacious beige has a lot to offer the average home, especially those with finishes from the early 2000s. That said, it can easily humor a range of more modern, trendy finishes.

With its gentle, muted undertones and moderate LRV (it’s in a great range), I’d recommend Spanish Sand for…

  • Whole homes
  • Single rooms.
  • I might not toss it on the kitchen cabinets anytime soon.
  • It can also look beautiful on exteriors, just watch that the exterior light doesn’t lean too yellow.

SW Natural Linen has a similar look to Spanish Sand (you’ll find a link to its review shortly)

Behr says that its LRV is 64. This makes it a light depth paint color, ideal for slightly dark rooms. Sure, it’ll wash out a bit in brighter rooms, but the only way to avoid that is to choose a darker color or close your blinds.

Not sure what LRV is? 3 SLAPS WITH A WET NOODLE! Just joking – read about it here – it’ll change your paint pickin’ life.

SIMILAR PAINT COLORS (BEHR VS. BENJAMIN MOORE & SHERWIN WILLIAMS)

You should never sample 1 single color. Compare a range to find the option that best suits your home’s finishes and lighting.

How to Sample Paint Colors

Within Behr, take a look at Roman Plaster, for sure. With its LRV of 65, they’re kissin’ cousins, sittin’ pretty in the light range. High Style Beige (#4, below) is great, too, especially if you want a bit more color/warmth than Spanish Sand offers.

Sherwin Williams Natural Linen Color Review

A great alternative to Spanish Sand includes Sherwin Williams Natural Linen (which is also one of my favorite, all-time beige paint colors). The main difference is that Natural Linen is a touch lighter (with a few undertone tweaks).

I also love Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan, which is super similar to Spanish Sand in terms of overall bias (undertones)/approach. If you find Spanish Sand a ‘touch’ too beige-orange, Clay Beige can be a nice tweak (which is different from a nice twerk, which I’m yet to perfect).

While Behr doesn’t offer Peel & Stick samples (yet), Benjamin Moore & Sherwin Williams do – check out this large sticker sample of Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan

2. BEHR BAJA PPU7-08

If your best shade of beige leans a wink more golden, take a look at Baja. Like strolling the sandy dunes of…wait, it’s nothing like that. While Baja has a sandy-ish aspect, its LRV of 55 has it looking a bit darker than the average, fresh, subtle sand-inspired hue.

As for its overall look, it is a bit richer than the average, more modern muted beige or tan. In comparing it to similar shades (which we’ll do shortly), you might also notice a wee wink o’ green undertone (it’s natural bias) show up at the party. Will it be bossy? Noooo, but if your finishes cater to a beige with more orange undertone, it could look more off-kilter than a nudist Scotsman.

If you’re considering Baja, here are some of its best uses in the average home…

  • A single room – it can be a bit much for a whole home, but you do you, boo
  • Boom, done. Just joking, maybe an exterior, too.

ALTERNATIVES (BEHR VS. BENJAMIN MOORE & SHERWIN WILLIAMS)

If you love the look of Baja, but want to see some similar shades (you’re smart), take a look at Behr Khaki Shade, which is a bit lighter (LRV 57). As for the other brands, take a look at Benjamin Moore Shaker Beige.

Benjamin Moore Shaker Beige Color Review | Paint Colors for Red-Stained Woods

I actually prefer Shaker Beige as it contains a bit more orange, making it more likely to suit the average interior finishes. For a lighter, slightly cleaner look, Benjamin Moore Monroe Bisque is a gorgeous option.

That said, if you find Baja a bit off, you might lean the other way, into a neutral that can appear a bit more yellow-green like Sherwin Williams Ramie

3. BEHR EVEN BETTER BEIGE DC-010

Even Better Beige might really be an ‘even better beige’ if you’re looking for a slightly different approach.

This is because it has more gray than the average warm beige or tan. Whereas many come up more golden, Even Better Beige winks at the greige-taupe world with a very serious ‘come hither nod’. Additionally, Behr states its LRV is 60, placing it on the slightly lower end of the light range.

SIMILAR PAINT COLORS (BENJAMIN MOORE & SHERWIN WILLIAMS)

Oh, if you’re feeling titillated by Even Better Beige, its best alternative is Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige.

Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige Color Review

Accessible Beige is one of Sherwin’s most popular, warm neutral paint colors. While both are warm neutrals, compare the 2 and see how Even Better Beige is a bit lighter (Accessible’s LRV is 58).

Colors like Accessible Beige and Even Better Beige can be interesting choices for painted cabinets, nodding to the trend of light, warm neutral cabinets

4. BEHR HIGH-STYLE BEIGE N270-1

High-Style Beige is a popular beige as it sits on a nice orange undertone (as many of the best beiges do), without too much of a lean toward orange-yellow or orange-pink. Just remember, your room’s natural lighting and even the Kelvins of your light bulbs can shift how a color appears!

Behr states is LRV at 69 (my inner teenager just smirked), making it a light color, but on the higher end, winking at the off-white world. Sure, it’ll wash out in bright light, as well as any color in this range, but overall it settles into a nice, soft contrast white trim.

As for homes with beige finishes, especially those built in the early 2000s, High-Style Beige can be a great option with a modern twist. Here are some of the best uses for High-Style Beige

  • A whole home, just make sure you want this much noticeable warmth in every…single…room.
  • It’s great for a single room
  • Be careful in south-facing rooms and in those with warm afternoon sunshine, as it will only look warmer.
  • I wouldn’t suggest it for cabinets or exteriors

SIMILAR SHADES

Within Behr, you might compare High-Style Beige to Roman Plaster if you want a bit less noticeable warmth. Roman Plaster has a similar approach, but is more muted, along with a bit more depth (LRV 65). If you’re looking for an alternative from Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore, I’ve got some gooders.

Benjamin Moore Muslin Paint Color Review

Benjamin Moore Muslin is amazeballs. It’s been a long time, reasonably timeless neutral – great for open-concept, single rooms, and whole homes. Compare it with High-Style Beige and notice how Muslin is just a touch more muted/less colorful (lower chroma).

I often recommend colors like Muslin/High-Style Beige to my clients, as their undertones suit a wide range of finishes and tastes, without being overly bossy.

Sherwin Williams Natural Linen Color Review

As for Sherwin Williams, check out Natural Linen, which is similar to H.S.B. but comes out more muted and calming, with a slightly lower LRV (66). Both can appear with an orange undertone, but overall, they offer a nice, balanced look. From there, just watch how your lighting and the room’s exposure might shift their look.

5. BEHR STUDIO CLAY MQ2-27

Studio Clay is a flexible, interesting beige-tan. Whereas some warm neutrals like this come off overly golden, this color has a calmer, more grounded approach.

Behr says that Studio Clay’s LRV is 62. This means it’s in the light range. A color like this is great for a well-lit room and can even handle a slightly darker space. Here are a few spaces you could use Studio Clay…

  • Its LRV is great for a single room with adequate lighting
  • It could work for a whole home, just make sure each room’s finishes suit it (sometimes you need more than 1 color to make magic)
  • I don’t suggest it for the average kitchen cabinet or exterior
  • Its moderate warmth makes it suitable for a range of exposures – north, south, the whole shebang. Just make sure you have ENOUGH light so it doesn’t look dingy.

SIMILAR PAINT COLORS (BEHR VS. BENJAMIN MOORE & SHERWIN WILLIAMS)

Within Behr, you might compare it to Casual Khaki, which has a bit more depth (LRV 57, compared to Studio Clay’s 62) and a touch more red, which makes it look a bit more orange.

As for Sherwin Williams, you’ll definitely want to explore Sand Beach. That said, for a bit more orange bias (a bit more beige), check out Sherwin Williams Kilim Beige (it can be a bit easier than Studio Clay when coordinating with interior finishes).

6. BEHR PASHA BROWN MQ2-51

Oooo, she’s a beauty, but she’s anything but ‘typical beige’. If you’re looking for a beige that’s calm and warm, but not ‘noticeable golden’, let me introduce you to the badass and beautiful, Pasha Brown.

Pasha (we’re on a first-name basis) has more depth than the standard beige, which we know by its LRV of 48. Whereas many of the other popular Behr beiges and tans sit in the light range, Pasha Brown dives into the light-medium depths. Here’s the best uses for Pasha Brown…

  • Single rooms
  • Open-concept spaces
  • Whole homes, but make sure you’re comfy with Pasha Brown’s increased depth compared to some of the others.
  • It’s totally doable for cabinets and exteriors (here are some more options).
  • In any room, just make sure there’s adequate lighting. With Pasha Brown’s grounded warmth and depth, it could look drab/dingy in dark spaces.

As for her approach, she’s grayed out, while still holding a passive, sophisticated warmth.

SIMILAR COLORS FROM BENJAMIN & SHERWIN

Behr (being a carnivore) tries to eat Benjamin alive, but ole Benny has a trick up his sleeve – Pashmina.

Benjamin Moore Pashmina Color Review

Benjamin Moore Pashmina is simply put, amazeballs. Admittedly, it’s more greige than beige (especially compared to Pasha Brown) and can appear a touch green, but in this general range, it’s a go-to in my Online Color Consulting

Ideas to update a room with 1990s 2000s fireplace, stacked stone, wood mantel, moldings, trim panels painted Sherwin Williams Balanced Beige, accent chairs, graywash LVP wood look floor

As for Sherwin Williams, you have to check out Balanced Beige, which is a great alternative to Pasha Brown. The first thing you might notice is that Balanced Beige looks a touch more taupe. While the basic stats might say that Balanced Beige is a bit darker, it’s not. Using my color tools and process (and my eyeballs), Pasha Brown has a bit more depth.

In my expert opinion, Balanced Beige is a bit nicer, but they are comparable.

7. BEHR CANVAS LUGGAGE N300-2

If sampling paint colors makes you want to pack your bags and move houses, check out Canvas Luggage – great to throw your clothes in AND for your walls!

Canvas Luggage is a warm, almost off-white neutral paint color. According to Behr, its LRV is 69, which means it’s great for a soft, gentle look, but won’t wash out as much as whites. As for undertones, while it could appear slightly green in some rooms, it’s not overly inclined that way. In fact, most of the time, it should look reasonably well-balanced between yellow, orange, and red.

If I were to suggest Canvas Luggage for its BEST use, I’d go for…

  • Single room use
  • Open-concept
  • While its depth lends itself well for being a whole home, warm neutral paint color, its undertones’ chance of skewing a bit green could limit the range of finishes – sample and compare colors carefully!

SIMILAR SHADES

As far as Behr’s best beige and tan paint colors go, in this depth (LRV) it’s near the top of the list for me. If you want to see what a slightly more yellow hue could look like, check out Sentimental Beige – same undertone, but a wink more yellow in its backdrop.

Seriously, you must check out Sherwin Williams Canvas Tan, as it’s the BEST alternative to Canvas Luggage. Of the 2, Canvas Tan is a bit more likely to lean yellow-green, but both are pretty subtle.

As for Benjamin Moore, White Sand offers a close match to Canvas Luggage (shown in the 2 images above). That said, compare it to Benjamin Moore Muslin, too – it can be interesting to see what a little shift in undertone can do!

8. BEHR MUSHROOM BISQUE PPU4-07

If your idea of a perfect beige paint color has a bit more meat on its bones, Mushroom Bisque could hit the spot.

Behr Mushroom Bisque popular beige paint color in bathroom, beige tile floor, beige granite countertop, maple orange vanity, oil rubbed bronze fixtures, warm neutral

Whereas many of the popular beiges and tans come in lighter and warmer, Mushroom Bisque ain’t messing around, and is deliciously warm. This bad boy has an LRV of 47, making it a light-medium paint color. Would you paint your whole home this color? SHOULD you? You could, but with this depth and warmth combined, I wouldn’t. Instead, I’d focus on…

  • Single room use, or multiple rooms, but maybe not the whole shebang
  • Exterior use

As for its approach, it has a rich warmth, with orange undertones, without being too colorful, thanks to a grounded, organic base. That said, it ain’t for the faint of heart.

COLORS THAT ARE SIMILAR (BENJAMIN & SHERWIN)

Within the Behr brand, I’d compare Mushroom Bisque to Lentil if you love MB’s type of warmth but want a lighter color with more life. That said, would I add lentils to mushroom bisque? No. That said, my specialty is more along the lines of Mr. Noodles with melted cheese.

The Best Rich, Golden Beige Paint Colors

Sherwin Williams Nomadic Desert is a great alternative to Mushroom Bisque. It’s a similar depth, but you might find that it appears a touch less pink/a bit more orange in comparison.

As for Benjamin Moore, Bluffs is interesting. It’s similar to Mushroom Bisque and Nomadic Desert, but appears just a touch richer, and should be a touch less pink than MB.
