Sherwin Williams Amazing Gray: LRV, Undertones and a Little More
When it comes to greige paint colours, Sherwin Williams is definitely in the lead, especially with colours like Amazing Gray. However, because I ONLY use photos from my Online Paint Colour Consulting clients, I don’t have photos of this fabulous colour (there are slightly more popular versions), but I DO have some VALUABLE information on this gorgeous paint colour…
What type of paint colour is Amazing Gray? Is it greige, warm gray or taupe?
Is Amazing Gray a warm or cool paint colour?
Amazing Gray is definitely a WARM paint colour, although it will look grayer in north-facing light or afternoon eastern or morning western light.
What’s the LRV of Amazing Gray?
Amazing Gray has an LRV of 47. With this LRV, you can expect to see some GOOD contrast with white trim and it would likely be a bit TOO dark to be used as a ‘whole home’ paint colour. If you have a bright room, it will add some balance to that bright light, but if you have a dark room, Amazing Gray could look a bit flat and dingy (learn more about LRV HERE).

What are the undertones of Amazing Gray? Will it look green, blue or purple?
When it comes to greige and gray paint colours, you will often see a noticeable blue, purple or green undertone – nature of the beast! Amazing Gray commits more to a green undertone that’s subtle, but noticeable, so if you don’t like green undertones, you PROBABLY won’t love this colour and you may want to read this instead.
What’s the best way to sample Amazing Gray?
Like with every paint colour, I highly recommend using SAMPLIZE. Samplize is a peel & stick paint sample that you can easily move around your room for over HALF THE COST of traditional sample pots – and they deliver right to your front door!
If I’m painting my walls Amazing Gray, what’s the best white paint colour for my trim?
Oooo, I do like Sherwin Williams Pure White with Amazing Gray. It has a passive warmth that sits really soft with it, while still contrasting nicely.
Is Amazing Gray a good colour for the exterior of my home?
Well, I’m not saying no, but I will say that in the hundreds of exterior paint colour consultations I’ve done, I’ve not suggested Amazing Gray more than three times. It’s just not a colour that sits well with most stones, bricks or roof colours.

Is Amazing Gray a popular greige paint colour?
Amazing Gray is in the middle for sure. There are MORE popular greige paint colours with reduced undertones (ie: Sherwin Williams Anew Gray), but there are also LESS popular choices. It’s more that people tend to lean into the lighter end of things when choosing colours for the ‘average’ room.
What type of paint colours look good with Amazing Gray?
Amazing Gray is a bit more particular when it comes to the types of paint colours it wants to be coordinated with…
- Amazing Gray likes some gray paint colours that are darker than itself but isn’t as happy with gray paint colours that are LIGHTER than it
- Amazing Gray loves to be partnered with darker versions of itself (ie: Anonymous/Intellectual Gray)
- Amazing Gray is okay with beige and tan paint colours that are lighter than itself and can also work with muted cream paint colours
