If you’ve noticed trends leaning warmer, you aren’t the only one! Whether it’s on my Instagram feed or blog comments, many are leaving the cool world of grays and embracing more warmth. But not everyone is embracing the world of beige.

And this is where colors like Amazing Gray come in handy. Whether for walls, cabinets, or exteriors, greiges are great happy mediums between the warm and cool worlds.

But not all greiges are meant for YOUR home, which is why sampling, comparing, and researching each color’s nuances are important parts of your color journey. So, let’s do that…

WHAT TYPE OF COLOR IS AMAZING GRAY?

Amazing Gray might have ‘gray’ in its name, but it’s warmer than that, as it’s a greige. Greiges are warmer than gray but not as warm as beige. And while some can teeter on the line, this bad boy tends to favor gray over beige, fo sho.

But regardless of which way it leans, it’s still considered a WARM neutral paint color.

Amazing Gray might seem a touch cooler or greener in some lighting, such as north-facing light. On the other hand, its muddy, organic warmth can show up a bit more in some muted southern-facing rooms.

THE DEPTH (LRV) OF AMAZING GRAY

Amazing Gray has an LRV of 47. With this LRV, you can expect good contrast with white trim – not shocking or harsh, but more noticeable than lighter colors.

At this depth, Amazing Gray is often used in open-concept spaces. And while some might consider it for a whole home, its undertones could be a bit limiting, and won’t suit a WIDE range of finishes.

With its depth and overall approach, it’s not always the best for dark rooms, as it can look murky and muddy without enough natural/interior lighting.

WHAT ARE ITS UNDERTONES?

When it comes to greige and gray paint colors, you’ll often see a noticeable blue, purple, or green undertone – nature of the beast! Amazing Gray can flash a touch of green in some lighting conditions, but often settles into a pretty darn ‘neutral’ look.

Could it look too green?

Really, that’s a question only you can answer. HOWEVER, in my not-so-humble opinion, if you don’t love green undertones, you could still like this color, as its undertones aren’t bossy at all. However, pair it with a finish with stronger purple-pink undertones (very common with today’s interior finishes), and green could show up at the party with tassels on (small ones, but it’ll be swingin’ them all the same).

Will it look purple?

Colors in this general range tend to favor green or purple-pink undertones. While it’s not impossible, Amazing Gray is less likely to appear purple-pink.

AMAZING GRAY WITH WOOD STAINS

Whether you have wood cabinets, flooring, trims, or furniture, this gorgeous greige can be a beautiful option, as long as you go in understanding what might happen.

Because most wood finishes are warm, Amazing Gray’s tendency toward green can show up a bit more as it contrasts with those warm stains. This can create a gorgeous, organic look without looking as forced as a more focused green undertone.

AMAZING GRAY ON KITCHEN CABINETS

Whether Amazing Gray is a good color for your cabinets (or bathroom vanity) depends on your countertop and backsplash combo.

Many popular quartz countertops prefer taupe paint colors, or those that lean slightly toward purple-pink, rather than green. Of course, there are tons that love a slight green hue, but you need to sample and compare carefully.

DOES IT GO WITH CREAM CABINETS & TRIMS?

It’s touch-and-go (mostly go). Because cream cabinets and trims have a yellow undertone, they can overreact to Amazing Gray’s muddiness, making them look even creamier. Of course, there’s the odd exception (a super-muted, light cream), but don’t assume your cream is it.

While the above image might look a bit like cream (in the background), don’t be fooled! That’s Benjamin Moore Wind’s Breath, which is FAR more grounded and neutral.

IS AMAZING GRAY A GOOD EXTERIOR COLOR?

Amazing Gray can be a gorgeous exterior color as long as it complements your stone, brick, and roof. Not as many roofs suit the subtle organic warmth of Amazing Gray, so make sure your undertones align!

On the other hand, the comparable Sherwin Williams Anew Gray and Agreeable Gray are more popular choices (more similar shades below).

While there are some amazing shades to compare with Amazing Gray, no two colors are the same, so sample, compare, and see which one best suits your finishes!

AMAZING GRAY COMPARED TO AGREEABLE GRAY

You’re smart to compare these two. While Amazing Gray is undoubtedly gorgeous, it’s not nearly as popular as Agreeable Gray.

Agreeable Gray is lighter than Amazing Gray, with a higher LRV (60). It’s also less likely to flash green with its reduced chroma (degree of color). This gives it a cleaner, less muddy/organic look.

Agreeable Gray is far more popular for a whole house, whereas Amazing Gray is more common for an open-concept or a single room.

In my experience/opinion, Agreeable Gray is a far safer color with more mass appeal (but I think Amazing Gray is prettier).

AMAZING GRAY COMPARED TO SHERWIN WILLIAMS ANEW GRAY

Apples to apples! Or wine to wine (white, of course) – we’re basically looking at different taste profiles.

Depth-wise, Anew Gray has the exact same LRV – 47, so it’s often considered for the same painting projects. As for undertones, Anew Gray is less likely to flash green (possible, but less so).

In my experience, my Online Color Consulting clients choose Anew Gray way more than Amazing Gray (also because I recommend Anew Gray more often).

DOES BENJAMIN MOORE HAVE SIMILAR SHADES?

You bet your cute lil’ booty it does, and comparing a range of similar colors is the best way to find your perfect shade.

Benjamin Moore Northern Cliffs is a more green-inclined hue than Amazing Gray, and great if you need more of that hue.
Actually, check out Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter. It’s lighter, for sure. However, I’ve done a LOT of playing with Revere Pewter, and when darkened by 25% or 50%, it can take on a similar look to Amazing Gray.

WHAT COLORS GO WITH IT?

Amazing Gray is a bit particular about its partners (just like me – wink wink), but is reasonably flexible (also like me).

DARKER GRAYS: Amazing Gray doesn’t love grays that are lighter than it. If the gray is darker, it’s best to be a GOOD dose darker and have a blue (blue-green) undertone.
DARK GREIGE: Amazing Gray loves to be partnered with darker versions of itself (i.e., Anonymous/Intellectual Gray)
You can go EVEN DARKER with Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze, which is a wicked pretty accent color to Amazing Gray.
BEIGE & TAN: Amazing Gray is okay with some lighter beige and tan paint colors, as long as they’re muted and modern.
WARM OFF-WHITES: Muted, modern, warm off-whites can be GORGEOUS with Amazing Gray.
DARK BLUE (BLUE-GRAY): Darker blue-gray can be used as an accent color on feature walls, islands, doors, etc.

Amazing Gray is a greige, so it’s warmer than gray but nowhere near as warm as beige.
