Sherwin Williams Intellectual Gray: Images, Undertones, & Real-Life Uses
With homeowners embracing softer, more organic palettes, it’s no surprise that colors like Intellectual Gray are popping up. And not just on walls, these glorious greiges show up on doors, exteriors, and cabinets, too.
But not every greige is created equal. Undertones, depth (LRV), and temperature set them apart, making one perfect while another is barely passable.
Today, we’re taking a look at Sherwin Williams Intellectual Gray to see if it’s the color that you and your home have been searching for…

WHAT TYPE OF COLOR IS INTELLECTUAL GRAY?
While it has the word ‘gray’ in its name, Intellectual Gray is definitely a greige paint color, having more warmth than any traditional gray.
This can work well for rooms with cooler light (e.g., northern light), where a homeowner doesn’t want beige or cream but grays are too cold.
THE LRV (DEPTH) OF INTELLECTUAL GRAY
So many of the most popular greiges and taupes sit in the light end – not this bad boy. While it’s nowhere near the ever-glorious Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze, it goes deeper than the usual bunch.

This is because Intellectual Gray has an LRV of 36, placing it smack dab in the middle of the medium depths. Because it has a bit more meat on its bones, it’s not a color people choose for their WHOLE home. Instead, they’re more likely to use it on a single-room basis.
INTELLECTUAL GRAY’S UNDERTONES
While a color’s undertones can ebb and flow based on surroundings, exposure, lighting, and perception, Intellectual Gray is most likely to flash a muddy, organic, earthy, and gloooorious green.
Is it overwhelming? If you don’t like green undertones – probably. However, if your finishes crave them and you’re open to it, it’s a pretty badass color.
THE BEST TRIM COLORS WITH INTELLECTUAL GRAY
If you’re looking for the perfect shade of white or off-white with your Intellectual Gray walls (or cabinets), you’ve got some great choices…
- Sherwin Williams Alabaster offers a purposeful, but softer, slightly creamy contrast compared to a brighter white. It leans that bit more into IG’s warmth.
- I also love the simpler, but still soft look of Sherwin Williams Pure White.
- Benjamin Moore White Dove? If you don’t mind swappin’ brands, this is one of my favorites. As far as paint colors go, I’m a huge swinger (don’t tell my hubby).

WHERE INTELLECTUAL GRAY DOES (& DOESN’T) WORK BEST
Intellectual is certainly no one-trick pony – it’s a multi-trick donkey. But that doesn’t mean it’s great for every job. Let’s see where it does its best work…

INTELLECTUAL GRAY WITH CREAM CABINETS & TRIM
HECK yeah, Intellectual Gray can be a wicked pretty partner to cream cabinets and trims. This is thanks to its depth and moody green undertone.
The Best MODERN Paint Colors for Cream Cabinets
99.5% of the photos in my blog are of REAL HOMES from my Online Color Consulting clients, readers, and friends. While not always magazine-perfect, they’re packed with ideas and proven color choices to help you create a home you’ll love.
WITH WOOD CABINETS, FLOORING & TRIMS
Again, it’s an instant win for me. Okay, maybe not instant, as it could be fussy with the odd wood stain. However, for the most part, Intellectual Gray can be a gorgeous accent to…

While I’d paint the wood baseboard to match the board-and-batten (probably the door trim, too), it really looks great.
- A wide range of golden oaks (more yellow and more orange)
- Red-stained woods, as it acts like a complement/accent
- More moderate, ‘brownish’ wood stains
- Teak, walnut, and more.
Where you might be more cautious is with lighter woods that have a pink undertone.
INTELLECTUAL GRAY ON CABINETS & ISLANDS
If your countertop and backsplash suit a moody, muddy greige, this is the color for you. While lighter shades of greige can make wall paint color choosing a heck of a lot harder, Intellectual Gray’s depth allows for a great range of wall pairings.
This next kitchen shows Sherwin Williams Felted Wool, which is a tone darker than Intellectual Gray and has similar intentions…

As for kitchen islands, it’s beautiful on this smaller scale, too. Whereas some darker shades are falling out of style in many homes, softer shades (especially with white or wood cabinets) pop up here and there.
IS INTELLECTUAL GRAY A GOOD EXTERIOR PAINT COLOR?
I LOVE Intellectual Gray on exteriors – straight-up. While it’s not as likely to suit a wide range of stone finishes, it can be gorgeous with a range of bricks.

The Best Blue & Teal Front Door Colors
With its LRV of 36, a color like this stands up to intense sunlight (e.g., southern light) without washing out as much as lighter shades will.
Intellectual Gray is also gorg. on shutters…

White exterior trim will create a cleaner contrast (as shown above), whereas a soft off-white is a bit more organic and muted. Or, you can create a tone-on-tone look with a shade of greige that’s darker than IG.
WHAT COLORS GO WITH INTELLECTUAL GRAY?
Whether you’re creating a color palette for your exterior, a single room, or need a gorgeous accent, these colors should have you covered…
- DARK GREIGE: Choose darker greige paint colors for a simple tone-on-tone look (monochromatic).
- TAUPES: Oooo, Intellectual Gray can look awesome with taupes – whether lighter shades or those with a bit more depth. Just make sure your taupes’ purple-pink undertone has a similar strength to IG’s green.
- MUTED CREAMS: Muted (low degree of yellow) creams can look beautiful, especially shades like Sherwin Williams Creamy and Benjamin Moore’s Ballet White (amazeballs).
- WARM OFF-WHITES: Many off-white paint colors (including the previous colors) are among my favorite color groups on IG. They offer a soft contrast and lean into its organic, natural intentions.
- SUBTLE BEIGES & TANS: Intellectual Gray does esepcially well with many of the most popular beige and tan paint colors. This includes top shades like Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige, Natural Tan, and more.
- RUSTY AUTUMN HUES: Play around with a range of dirty, rich, rusty oranges, including dusky terracottas.
- NAVY BLUE: I love a muted navy blue when it pops off the muddy green of Intellectual Gray. Sherwin Williams Cyberspace is a good place to start, but there’s more where that came from!
COLORS THAT ARE SIMILAR…
Because you should NEVER choose a paint color without comparing it to a range of similar shades, let’s see which are the front runners…

L-R: SW Pavestone / SW Intellectual Gray / BM Pashmina
By the way, I’m borderline obsessed with Pashmina (above), but it’s not ‘similar enough’ to qualify for this section.
INTELLECTUAL GRAY COMPARED TO FAWN BRINDLE
In the battle of IG vs. Fawn Brindle, I gotta give it to Intellectual Gray. While they have very similar intentions – both are greiges with an organic, muddy warmth. And while they ALSO share the exact same LRV of 36…
Intellectual Gray is slightly warmer.

Sherwin Williams Fawn Brindle Color Review
That’s it. But that can be a dealbreaker if your finishes or lighting need a little wink of coziness!
INTELLECTUAL GRAY COMPARED TO FELTED WOOL
Ooooo, you’re testing me on this one – these are both stunners. IG and Felted Wool are both greige paint colors. They have a similar commitment to green and have an earthy, organic vibe.

R-L: SW Felted Wool / SW Anonymous / BM Cheating Heart
Where you’ll see a difference is in depth, as Felted Wool has an LRV of 28, making it a good dose darker than Intellectual Gray.
WHAT’S SIMILAR IN BENJAMIN MOORE?
It’s smart to swap brands, as you never know where your perfect paint color might be!
- If you find that Felted Wool’s slightly green hue is too much, Benjamin Moore Rockport Gray could be a good, balanced adjustment. Ooo, same with Benjamin Moore River Reflections.
- Benjamin Moore’s River Gorge Gray adds more depth and body and a touch more green, too.
QUICK RECAP
- A warm, greige paint color. Not as cool as gray, not as warm as beige (but favoring gray, of the 2).
- An LRV of 36, making it a medium-depth color
- Often used in single rooms, but also popular on accent walls (with off-whites), exteriors, and cabinets.
