Benjamin Moore Coventry Gray: LRV, Undertones and a Little More
Have you been looking for the perfect gray paint color, one with a bit more depth and body than the usual light versions? Have I got a color for you!
I love to show RELATEABLE & REAL homes, so ONLY use photos from my Online Color Consulting clients. This means I don’t always have the quality pics I need (hence the ‘QUICK Review’), but DEFINITELY have some SUPER helpful info to help you on your way!
What type of paint color is Coventry Gray? Is it a warm gray or a cool gray?
Coventry Gray is a gray paint color that ISN’T icy cold, but it’s also not a warm gray. It’s what I call a soft or stormy gray. If you have north-facing light it will look much cooler and more like a traditional COLD gray, but if you have south-facing or afternoon western light, it will look considerably softer.

What’s the LRV of Coventry Gray?
Coventry Gray has an LRV of almost 48. This puts it in the light-medium range, but it’s on the HEAVIER side and in a darker room could act more like a medium-toned paint color (learn more HERE).
In the above image, see how Coventry Gray sits considerably lighter than Chelsea Gray, which is a VERY SOLID medium-depth paint with an LRV of 22.
Not sure what LRV is? It could save your paint lovin’ life – read all about it HERE.
What are the undertones of Coventry Gray? Will it look blue, green or purple?
As you might know by reading my blog, EVERY gray has undertones! Coventry Gray favours a very soft, gentle blue undertone, but easily slides into a subtle blue-green, rarely purple though.
What’s the best way to sample Coventry Gray?
Like with every paint color, I highly recommend using SAMPLIZE. Samplize is a peel & stick paint sample that you can easily move around your room for over HALF THE COST of traditional sample pots – and they deliver right to your front door!

If I’m painting my walls Coventry Gray, what’s the best white paint color for my trim?

Is Coventry Gray a good color for the exterior of my home?
It certainly could be! Coventry Gray, with it’s slightly lower LRV can hold itself well on a home with intense south-facing light, more so than an off-white or light paint color which could washout.

Is Coventry Gray a popular gray paint color right now?
Not particularly, as there are FAR more popular gray paint colors that are in the light or SOFTER, light-medium range. With its extra bit of depth, Coventry Gray is being used more for kitchen islands, cabinets, vanities or as a passive feature wall.
While you can’t see much of it, Coventry Gray was used on this kitchen island. This white kitchen was the perfect place for Coventry Gray to feel at home…
What Sherwin Williams paint colors are the same as or similar to Coventry Gray?
You won’t find an exact match for ANY color between brands – you WILL see shifts in undertones, temperature and depths. However, there are some with similar intentions, but different approaches…
- Sherwin Williams Light French Gray
- Sherwin Williams Tinsmith
And if you’re thinking of color matching between brands (ie: getting BM to make an SW paint color), you might want to read THIS first.

Greetings from Toronto! Love all your posts Kylie! I picked all my paint colours by reading your website! I even ordered Samplize samples to make sure the colours would work! I ended up painting my bedroom Coventry Gray and it is beautiful – definitely a medium gray but with a blue undertone. I went with the lighter Stonington Gray in the living room and kitchen and it is stunning!

Hellooooooo Toronto! I love when a Canadian friend pops in ;). So many assume I’m from the US as I think that’s where a lot of the bloggers are from, but nope, I’m a west coast of Canada girl!
And isn’t Coventry/Stonington a great combo? They are just so SOFT and cool, but not ICY cold – good choices ;).
Would a Coventry gray island go with with my Sherwin Williams sea salt walls and alabaster trim/cabinets?

Hi Hannah! I think Coventry Gray will be too light and not different enough from Sea Salt, I would go for a bit more depth and undertone as well 🙂
Love your reviews! I’ve just repainted my upper and lower cabinets in Stonington Gray and my island with Hale Navy. I’m at a loss of what to put on walls! Pure white is my trim, and ceiling. Should I go lighter or darker on walls ?

Hi Christy! It can be tricky to figure out a wall colour when you have light cabinets! I lean towards PURE WHITE on the walls to get some contrast with the cabinets and a seamless approach with the trim, without going too heavy on the walls. I’d hesitate to go darker with the Stonington/Hale in place 🙂
Hi! Would Coventry Gray be a good match for an interior door? I’m painting the trims/ceiling with Changilly Lace and the walls Classic Gray? Thanks! (Love your blog!!)

Mmmmm, I’m liking the sounds of this combo :).
I NEED your advice!!! IS Coventry Gray too blue for my green granite kitchen countertops? I know you say is has a slight blue-green undertone, but hoping it will work with the green granite (not sure what kind it is, but looks like the green version of baltic brown). The floors are also those beige tuscan tiles from 15 years ago that went with the tuscan look, not pure beige, but varying colors of it with oranges and cream undertones. I sampleized it, but wanted your opinion if this color is going to update my kitchen or make it more dated. PLEASE HELP!!!
