Sherwin Williams Silverplate: LRV, Undertones and a Little More

Have you been looking for the best gray paint color, but can’t find just what you’re looking for? Well, have I got a paint color for you!

What type of paint color is Silverplate? Is it a warm gray or a cool gray paint color?

Silverplate is a slightly cool looking gray paint color – not an overly icy one, but definitely not traditionally warm. It’s what I call ‘soft and stormy’ and can really change its visual temperature (your perception of how it looks) based on the exposure of your room.

If you have north-facing light, you might find Silverplate looking a wink more cool or gray-blue. If you have south-facing light, you’re more likely to see a bit of that stormy softness.

What’s the LRV of Silverplate?

Silverplate has an LRV of 53, so it’s a light-medium depth paint color. If you have a room with a ton of natural light, you might find that it holds its color a bit better than a comparable light gray paint color, which COULD wash out. However, if you have a dark room, you will need good interior lighting to bring it to life, otherwise, it could look a bit drab.

What are the undertones of Silverplate? Will it look blue, green or purple?

Every gray paint color has undertones, and Silverplate is no exception, as it favours a very mild blue undertone. Now, blue undertones can slide either blue-purple or blue-green – Silverplate is a blue-green, but those undertones are VERY passive.

Is Silverplate a good color for the exterior of my home? 

It certainly could be! With its light-medium LRV, Silverplate can hold up a bit better to strong sunshine, which could otherwise wash-out a lighter paint color. It also suits a clean white trim and black or dark navy blue front door or shutter colors.

Is Silverplate a popular paint color right now?

Silverplate isn’t super popular, simply because many people lean towards this type of color, but LIGHTER VERSIONS of it, such as Sherwin Williams Big Chill, Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray or Gray Owl.

What Benjamin Moore paint colors are similar or the same as Silverplate?

You won’t find an exact match for ANY color between brands – you WILL see shifts in undertones, temperature and depths. However, there are some with similar intentions, but different approaches…

• Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray
• Benjamin Moore Gray Owl

And if you’re thinking of color matching between brands (ie: getting BM to make an SW paint color), you might want to read THIS first.

What type of paint colors look good with Silverplate?

Silverplate has a few preferences but is reasonably flexible, including…

• Some subtle blue-green paint colors with a decent dose of gray in them
• Some soft off-whites as well as white paint colors
• It can also work well with muted cream-greige blends
• Silverplate generally doesn’t love to be partnered with grays that are lighter AND cooler than it, or beige/tans that are darker than it
