Benjamin Moore Metropolis: a warm gray for walls, exteriors, trims & doors
Long before Sherwin Williams Dovetail rocked the cabinet color world, there was a little ‘ole color called Metropolis making a name for itself. So today, we’re going to take a close look at this popular gray paint color to see if it could work for you and your home!
I love to show RELATEABLE & REAL homes, so ONLY use photos from my Online Color Consulting clients. This means I don’t always have the quality pics I need (hence the ‘QUICK Review’), but DEFINITELY have some SUPER helpful info to help you on your way!
What type of paint color is Metropolis? Is it greige, gray or taupe?
Metropolis is a gray paint color but it’s not a TRADITIONAL gray by any stretch of the imagination as it has undertones and temperature shifts to consider. With trends leaning warmer, I wouldn’t be surprised to see MORE of Metropolis on our cabinets, exteriors and walls.
Is Metropolis a warm gray paint color or a cool one?
Metropolis is a WARM gray paint color and even with north-facing light, you’d be hard-pressed to get it to flash cool. Any warmer and you’ll be dabbling in the greige/taupe range.

What’s the LRV of Metropolis?
Metropolis has an LRV of 23.45, putting it WELL into the medium-depths with a richness and body that sets it apart from some of the other popular gray blends.
Not sure what LRV is? It could save your paint lovin’ life – read all about it HERE.
What are the undertones of Metropolis? Will it look purple, blue or green?
Many of my Online Color Consulting clients are looking for the EVER-ELUSIVE neutral gray paint color (which doesn’t exist). And while you can often find ANY of the three gray undertones in one color, Metropolis favours purple.
What’s the best way to sample Metropolis?
Undoubtedly, you’ll be heading out in the near future to grab paint samples – stop right there! I want you to check out SAMPLIZE. Samplize offers peel and stick paint samples that are more AFFORDABLE, EASIER and more ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY than traditional paint pots. Here are just a FEW reasons why I recommend Samplize to my clients…
- samples arrive ON YOUR DOORSTEP in 1-3 business days, depending on location
- at $6.99, they’re more affordable than the samples pots/rollers/foam boards that are needed for traditional paint sampling
- if you keep the samples on their white paper, you can move them around the room

If I’m painting my walls in Metropolis, what’s the best white paint color for my trim?

Is Metropolis a good exterior paint color?
With its medium-range LRV, Metropolis can look FANTASTIC on an exterior, keeping in mind that it might look a bit warmer than expected in some exterior lighting, especially south-facing, morning eastern or afternoon west-facing light. Just make sure it suits your stone, brick, roof and other exterior considerations.

Is Metropolis one of the more popular gray paint colors?
While Sherwin Williams Dovetail seems to be more popular, some of my clients are wanting a bit more warmth, which is why Metropolis can be a smart choice for cabinets, walls and exteriors. You’ll also see a lot of it on INTERIOR doors.
Is Metropolis a good paint color for kitchen cabinets or an island?
Absolutely. Metropolis is a beautiful depth if you don’t want white cabinets, but also don’t want a super dark color. However, it can be a bit warm for many of today’s popular gray, white and marble-look quartz and laminate countertops, but can suit many of the granite countertops from the ’90s and early 2000s.

What Sherwin Williams paint colors are the same as or similar to Metropolis?
You won’t find an exact match for ANY color between brands, however, there are some with similar intentions, but different approaches, such as Sherwin Williams Dovetail and Sherwin Williams Gauntlet Gray.

What type of paint colors look good with Metropolis?
When it comes to Metropolis, it’s important to remember that it’s a CONSIDERABLY warm gray, so it’s not quite as flexible as a traditional gray paint color. However, it does have some versatility with colors like…
- some lighter greige paint colors with similar undertones
- DOESN’T love to be partnered with colors that are lighter and cooler than itself unless there’s some good separation/walls between them
- loves deep grounded, darker earth-tones, particularly green-gray blends
