Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze is a dark, warm greige paint color that I recommend to my color clients all…the…time. Why? Because it’s awesome on kitchen cabinets, accent walls, trim and doors, along with exterior surfaces.
Colors with low LRVs, like Urbane Bronze, can change their appearance depending on the amount and type of natural or interior light they receive, and I’ve seen Urbane do some wild and wonderful things in my client’s homes (in my own home, too!). But that doesn’t mean it always works.
Now, when Urbane Bronze showed up as the Color of the Year (several years ago), I wasn’t surprised at all – it’s like I picked it myself! With its depth, undertones, and range of uses, it’s a GREAT color to try out – which should be the goal of any Color of the Year; it should get people excited to paint SOMETHING!
So, let’s dive into this bad boy and see if he could work for you!
IS URBANE BRONZE GREIGE, BROWN OR GRAY? WARM OR COOL?
Urbane Bronze is one of the most glorious, warm greige paint colors that I recommend all the time to my online color clients. What sets it apart is its depth and undertones, both of which we’ll cover shortly.
If you have a room with northern exposure, Urbane Bronze can fall that bit more into gray while still holding a luscious passive warmth. However, if you have south-facing or afternoon western light, Urbane Bronze will could lean into its warmth a bit more, picking up a subtle richness. I friggin’ love this color.

WHAT’S THE LRV OF URBANE BRONZE?
Urbane Bronze has an LRV of 8, so while it’s not THE darkest color, it’s definitely getting down there. The low LRV of Urbane Bronze puts it on the slightly darker end of the DARK range – however, it’s not close to being black and shouldn’t ‘act in place of it’.

WHAT ARE URBANE BRONZE’S POTENTIAL UNDERTONES?
While Urbane Bronze has a super grounded, organic, neutral base, a green hue often shows up at the party, along with some brownish warmth. Is the green dominant? It depends on how sensitive you are. I love green, so the more the merrier. However, if you’re sensitive to green, you might look for different color.
Could it look too brown?
Yup, for some people, Urbane Bronze is a bit too warm and brownish – they want more gray. For others, it’s the perfect balanced between worlds.

I’ve spent many years working with this badass, beautiful color, and have a strong opinion on where it looks best. First, let’s hit some general points and then touch on a few key ones…

WHY IS IT A GOOD COLOR FOR EXTERIOR SIDING OR TRIM?
Urbane Bronze can be awesome on the exterior. With a dramatic depth and rich warmth, it can look wickedly gorgeous with a range of bricks and stones, assuming they suit its undertones.

As for trim, it’s a beautiful partner to a very wide range of siding or stucco colors, including other shades of greige, beige, and tan.
5 Tips for Choosing an Exterior Paint Color
DOES IT GO WITH CREAM CABINETS & TRIM?
Yup, Urbane Bronze pairs well with many cream trim and cabinet colors. With this pairing, it’s more about CONTRAST, as cream colors are always light, and UB is daaaang dark. That said, assuming it suits the other finishes, I wouldn’t hesitate to pair it with cream cabinets (commonly used when updating early 2000s kitchens).
IS URBANE BRONZE GOOD FOR AN ACCENT WALL?
This is a tough one. While it can be super pretty as an accent wall, it’s very dark and very strong. Not everyone or every room is ready for this kind of commitment. Instead, I often suggest a color like Sherwin Williams Porpoise to my clients for a similar, but softer look.
IS URBANE BRONZE STILL A POPULAR PAINT COLOR?
Oh, you bet your cute lil’ booty it is! While other Colors of the Year fade within months of their announcement, Urbane Bronze is like the Energizer bunny of paint colors. Many of my clients and readers still reach for it on all kinds of exterior and interior surfaces.
IS IT A GOOD COLOR FOR KITCHEN CABINETS?
Definitely, Urbane Bronze can be just what you need if a standard darker gray paint color isn’t warm enough for your countertop and backsplash.

IS IT A GOOD COLOR FOR AN ENTIRE ROOM?
While I might not paint an open-concept space Urbane Bronze (or have yet to suggest it to clients), it can be a gorgeous color for a room. HOWEVERRRRR, you better be ready for some serious, dramatic moodiness!
With its depth, and grounded, organic look, it wraps up your room in a cloak of subtle warmth and drama.
WHAT COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO URBANE BRONZE?
GOOD QUESTION! While there will never be a perfect color match, there are a few similar shades, making them great for comparison.
- Benjamin Moore’s Dragon’s Breath is pretty darn close, but offers a bit more warmth
- Sherwin Williams Ironclad is definitely worth comparing
- Sherwin Williams Porpoise is one of my favorites for a slightly softer, more green-centric look (but still subtle)
- Sherwin Williams Thunder Gray is dark and moody and a great option
- Sherwin Williams Iron Ore, which is darker than Urbane Bronze but has a subtle warm green undertone

WHAT PAINT COLORS GO WITH URBANE BRONZE?
It’s not hard to coordinate with Urbane Bronze, as he’s pretty darn easy to please.
- NO COOL LIGHT GRAYS: UB doesn’t love to be partnered with many cooler light gray paint colors
- OTHER GREIGES: This dark greige loves other greiges, including light to medium shades
- WARM GRAY: It can humor some warm gray paint colors, especially those with a passive green undertone
- MUTED CREAMS: Sample some muted, neutralized cream paint colors
- OFF-WHITES: A ton of off-whites look amazeballs with UB as their color partner
- BEIGE & TAN: A wide range of warm neutrals can look gorgeous in a palette with UB
- SMOKY GRAY-BLUES: I love pairing Urbane Bronze with smoky blues for a moody, coastal, organic look
SUMMARY
If I were to pull together my main experiences and knowledge of Urbane Bronze, here’s what it looks like…
- LRV of 8 – it’s dark
- I most often see it pick up a greenish-brown hue. Some find it too gray, others too brown – it comes down to perception
- It’s wickedly pretty on cabinets, islands, accent walls, and entire rooms…so long as you love a moody look
- It’s a great exterior paint color, and I recommend it at least once a week for exterior trim, doors, or siding
- You’ll find a wide range of whites that coordinate with it and few that don’t
- I’ve found BM Dragon’s Breath to be its best comparable, but when my clients shift, they often go a touch lighter to SW Porpoise

Does Urbane Bronze go at all with the Moderate White? Of course I have the pink orange tile. So noticed video on Moderate white and even 50% Moderate white. However, I wondered what island color. I do love Urbane Bronze but am repeating to myself its not what I love necessarily but what goes with my home.

It depends on the space. My first instinct was YES, but it would be on the surrounding finishes/decor to really link them.

Urbane Bronze has worked some magic for me in the past. I’m hoping it will do it again.
I have a 1950s mid-mod house with a low-pitched roof, and no matter how well I choose roofing shingles, they tend to reflect a lot of light when lying so perpendicularly to the sky and they can take on a cooler appearance that clashes with the warm orange stonework in my facade. The siding is a dark muted blue-green similar to SW Pewter Green and it complements the stonework beautifully.
My last roof was Owens-Corning Aged Copper which had orange and blue-green in it and I thought it would harmonize with the siding and stone. It certainly looked like it did when a panel was held up vertically in front of both. But the roof took on a pinkish/reddish cast when installed. To remedy this, I used Urbane Bronze as a trim color and it managed to pull the orange out of the roof as well as the stonework and the house looked fantastic.
This year I had to replace the roof due to structural work that needed to be done, so I went with Owens-Corning Sand Dune, the sample of which looked warm and looked fabulous against the stonework. However it takes on a very cool cast when perpendicular to the sky, a mix of purple-ish looking tones that clashes badly with the orange stonework and doesn’t look all that good with blue-green siding either. I’m considering going full Urbane Bronze on the siding in the hopes that it will warm up the roof. I had been considering coloring the stonework but I’d hate to lose one of the best-preserved architectural features of this house.
Any other suggestions how I might solve this predicament? I don’t really want to go with the farmhouse fad this late in the game, but it had also occurred to me to do Shoji White siding with Urbane Bronze trim to see if that might play better against the stonework.

I’m thinking about painting my stair railing Urbane Bronze. My walls are anew grey and my steps wood with a light/medium gray on the uppers and white on the front of the step. Can’t decide if painting all of the railing would be too much? Should I paint the 🔝 railing only and leave the rest white?

Hi there! We are painting the exterior of our 1970s shed style house (a bit of mcm styling thrown in there) in urbane bronze. we are also installing new modern front doors, which are quite recessed under a portico and dont get much light. Due to the recessed front doors and the dark exterior paint, we want a bright pop of color for the doors. Torn between something like SW Mandarin and SW Maxi Teal. We also have some red brick on the bottom part-foundation of the house, though most of it is the painted vertical siding. Any suggestions for either teal or orange ish colors?

need help! we will have a kitchen island painted urban bronze, kitchen cabinets will be natural choice, sherwin williams. we have no idea for a color counter top. it will be quartz but need help with a color. we’d like the island in a different color counter top but don’t know how to pull that off. smaller kitchen and dark walnut wood floors. we are thinking rose gold hardware and faucet. thoughts?

We are painting our island Urban Bronze and thinking about Agreeable Gray by SW for wall cabinets. Tge countertops will be Leatgered Fantady Brown. We currently have Repose gray on Dining/ Kitchen walls. What are your thoughts on this. Also what would ve a good choice for backsplash, glass tile or muted stone? Love reading your blogs.

adore your blog! we’re thinking of going moody for our modern farmhouse garden shed and doing it Urbane Bronze. it is in the Southern side of the home buy partially shaded. our home is Caliente and interior walls are Shoji White. Do you think this will look beautiful or concern for too green? we want the complementary but natural organic look!
