Sherwin Williams Classic French Gray: LRV, Undertones and a Little More
When it comes to picking the best gray paint colour, it’s hard to figure out which one suits your home AND your personal tastes, meaning research is SO IMPORTANT! Which is why I’m glad you’re here with me today, drinkin’ the Ginger-flavoured Kool-Aid while we take a closer look at Sherwin Williams Classic French Gray.
I love to show RELATEABLE & REAL homes, so ONLY use photos from my Online Colour Consulting clients. This means I don’t always have the quality pics I need (hence the ‘QUICK Review’), but DEFINITELY have some SUPER helpful info to help you on your way!
What type of paint colour is Sherwin Williams Classic French Gray? Is it warm or cool? Is it a TRUE NEUTRAL GRAY?
And when I say ‘cool gray’, I don’t mean icy friggin’ cold gray, as while it is slightly cool, the weight and body of it give it a softer, stormier approach.
What’s the LRV of Classic French Gray?
Classic French Gray has an LRV of 24 which puts it on the slightly HEAVIER end of the medium-range (my fave end of it, personally – I like a lil’ junk in the trunk). A paint colour with THIS low of an LRV is awesome because while it has body and bulk, it won’t look BLACK even if you have a dark room. It also holds up quite well to a SUPER bright room that gets a ton of sun shining on its walls.
Just LOOK at the difference in these next two photos between shade and sun!
And while natural light IS CRAZY, it’s not SO crazy that it changed the front door colour that much ;). Part of this Online Paint Colour Consult included a new gorgeous blue-green paint colour for the front door – with the previous photo being the final choice.
Not sure what LRV is? It could save your paint lovin’ life – read all about it HERE.

What are the undertones of Classic French Gray? Will it look blue, purple or green?
The tricky thing is that because Classic French Gray has very MINIMAL undertones – just slightly green, it’s VERY SUSCEPTIBLE to picking up cues from its environment and exposure and could pick up a wee wink o’ purple or blue given the opportunity (MOST likely blue).
What’s the best way to sample Classic French Gray?
Like with every paint colour, I highly recommend using SAMPLIZE. Samplize is a peel & stick paint sample that you can easily move around your room for over HALF THE COST of traditional sample pots – and they deliver right to your front door!

Is Classic French Gray a popular paint colour right now?
If you’re painting a kitchen island, bathroom vanity, feature wall or exterior, then yes, Classic French Gray COULD be popular. I just think that via its placement in the fan deck (not right in the mix of things) it gets missed.
