Benjamin Moore Dove Wing OC-18: Paint Color REVIEW

Posted on February 17, 2024 by KylieMawdsley

THE CREAMY OFF-WHITE YOU’VE BEEN DREAMING OF…

When it comes to creamy whites and off-whites, they all have a yellow undertone. However, this is the one undertone people want to avoid when looking for a creamy white – funny, eh? This is why it’s important to find a creamy neutral that NODS towards yellow without taking it on as a full-time job. This is also why we’re taking a darn close look at Benjamin Moore’s Dove Wing.

IS DOVE WING A WARM OR COOL PAINT COLOR?

Dove Wing is a warm paint color. While its gray backdrop calms it down, its bones are still warm. Sure, if you compare it to a more legit creamy hue like Benjamin Moore Acadia White, it SEEMS cooler – it ain’t. This makes Dove Wing one of the best ‘creamy white or off-white paint colors’ for those who don’t like yellow!

WHAT’S THE LRV OF DOVE WING

Dove Wing has an LRV (Light Reflectance Value) of 77.52, which puts it in the wild world of off-whites. However, compared to many popular shades, Dove Wing is on the higher end of the range without nipping too close to the heels of the white range.

WHAT UNDERTONES DOES DOVE WING HAVE?

Dove Wing has a yellow undertone as it’s in the yellow hue family. However, for those who don’t love yellow, this is about as muted as it gets – if we drop much more, you won’t have a cream-based color! The reason it’s so subtle is that Dove Wing has a gray undertone and can even give a vaguely polite nod to taupe, given the right lighting.

WHAT WHITE TRIM COLOR GOES WITH DOVE WING?

Because Dove Wing is on the light end of the off-white range, some paint their trims, ceilings, and doors in Dove Wing for a soft, seamless look. If you want to show off your wall color with a bit more contrast, White Dove is a popular choice, although I love the look of Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace and Sherwin Williams Pure White.

6 Questions to Ask Before You Paint Your Cabinets White

IS DOVE WING A GOOD COLOR FOR THE EXTERIOR OF A HOME?

With the white wall trend slowly falling out of fashion, we’re also seeing white exteriors fade away (not literally, just figuratively). In their place, we’re seeing more gentle off-whites, including colors like Dove Wing. LONG story short, yes, Dove Wing can be a beautiful exterior color, especially with black windows. However, if the front of your home faces south or you get a ton of afternoon western sunshine, know that Dove Wing can lean more into its yellow base.

IS DOVE WING A GOOD OFF-WHITE COLOR FOR KITCHEN CABINETS?

Creamy cabinets have a bad rap thanks to the early 2000s when they were overused and partnered with Tuscan-style finishes and older-style granite countertops. The great thing about Dove Wing is that while it has cream tendencies, it’s miles away from the ‘real’ cream world. All the same, watch that its particular blend of undertones doesn’t flash too cream or even slightly taupe/pink against your finishes.

WHAT COLORS ARE SIMILAR TO BM DOVE WING?

Now, that’s a good question. Luckily, several shades pick up a bit of what Dove Wing is throwin’ down.

DOVE WING VS WHITE DOVE

The biggest difference between Dove Wing and White Dove (which people often confuse as being the same color, thanks to the similar names) is their LRV. Dove Wing has an LRV of 77.52, whereas White Dove sits around 85. This difference makes Dove Wing an off-white and White Dove a shade of white.

Next, Dove Wing has a touch more pink-gray in its backdrop. Fractional at best, but all the same, in comparison to White Dove, it’s slightly noticeable. Will it be noticeable on your walls or cabinets? Sample it up carefully and see how your lighting affects it.

Where they’re similar is that both satisfy the title of ‘warm creamy white or off-white’ as they carry a subtly perfect amount of warmth.

Because White Dove and Swiss Coffee are VERY similar, let’s also take a quick look at it. Swiss Coffee has an LRV of 81.91, dabbling between the white and off-white worlds but not as dark as Dove Wing. Swiss Coffee is also a touch inclined toward green (yellow-green) compared to Dove Wing and White Dove.

DOVE WING VS SEA PEARL

Sea Pearl (also known as China White OC-141) is very similar to Dove Wing. Based on their LRVs, both colors are off-whites, with Sea Pearl coming in a bit lower with its LRV of 76.45 to Dove Wing’s 77.52. You might also notice a tiny touch more pink/taupe tucked in Sea Pearl compared to the VERY slight creamy backdrop in Dove Wing, and both colors are worth comparing for your project.

DOVE WING VS SHERWIN WILLIAMS WHITE HERON

When it comes to Sherwin Williams paint colors, nothing comes as close to Dove Wing as White Heron (a color I have MAD love for). White Heron has an LRV of 76, making it slightly darker, but VERY close in depth to Dove Wing (the difference is hardly noticeable).

When talking about White Heron, I refer to it as a hybrid between cream and taupe – taupe being a violet-pink color. Where the difference lies is that White Heron is more committed to taupe than Dove Wing. Dove Wing slightly nods at it, whereas White Heron is going in for a kiss. And seriously, Sherwin Williams described White Heron as a cool, clear white – it’s far from it (I don’t know where they get these words from).

WHICH PAINT COLORS GO WITH DOVE WING?

Thanks to its mixed undertones, Dove Wing is pretty open to a range of color partners.
