Sherwin Williams Eider White: your new favourite off-white paint color?

Eider White is often referred to as the PERFECT off-white gray paint color. But while it’s great for some spaces, it has some VERY SERIOUS nuances to consider!

What type of paint color is Eider White? Is it greige, gray or taupe? Warm or cool?

Eider White is a WARM GRAY paint color, but not one of the POPULAR gray paint colors, as its depth, temperature and undertones set it apart (which we’ll get into shortly).

If you have north-facing light, you might see Eider White lean that bit more gray, and the undertone can pop up a bit more. On the other hand, Eider is more likely to lean into its subtle warmth in south-facing or afternoon western light.

What’s the LRV of Eider White?

Eider White’s LRV is 73, which puts it in the off-white range…but not by much (learn more HERE). If you have a bright room, it can wash out. If you have a DARK room, this type of paint color can look dingy and flat if you don’t have reasonable interior lighting.

What are the undertones of Eider White? Will it look gray, violet, pink or blue?

Every gray has undertones, including warm grays. Eider White FAVOURS a soft, slightly warm violet undertone which can lean a wink cooler in northern light and a bit warmer in south-facing or afternoon western light.

Is Eider White a good color for the exterior of my home? 

When it comes to white and off-white paint colors on exteriors, you DO need to be careful and be aware of the undertones. Why? Even subtle undertones can rise up and bite you when applied on a large scale. This means that Eider White does worry me a bit, as that violet can come up. This being said, it can also suit many of the popular stone, brick and roof colors, and I’ve seen it turn out quite well.
