The Best Light Greige Cabinet Color: SHERWIN WILLIAMS AGREEABLE GRAY
A light neutral that brings style to any kitchen…
While white is the most timeless (safest) choice for kitchen cabinets, many have fallen in love with the softer approach of off-white and light-depth cabinets. And while they come with their challenges, non-white cabinets have taken over our Instagram feeds as the ‘go-to’ colors for kitchen cabinets.
Of these more subtle warm neutrals, there’s one color that my Online Color Consulting clients have been craving—Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray.
While some see Agreeable Gray as a considerably warm gray, it’s more of a greige-taupe. This flexibility, combined with a MINIMAL undertone, means that Agreeable Gray is THE hot color for kitchen cabinets.
WHY?

When coordinating wall colors with cabinet colors, it’s ideal if at least 20 LRV points (or more) are between the two colors. With an LRV of 60, Agreeable Gray partners with a few off-whites, soft whites, bright whites, and colors in the softer end of the medium range (-40 LRV). But don’t get me wrong—while this versatility is good, you still have to pay close attention to depth and undertone—the world is NOT your colorful oyster.
But that’s an entire blog post unto itself…
The Pros & Cons of OFF-WHITE Painted Kitchen Cabinets
So, let’s see if Agreeable Gray is the paint color you’ve been looking for.
AGREEABLE GRAY KITCHEN CABINETS: PALETTE #1
In this first home, you’ll see Agreeable Gray cabinets, partnered with Sherwin Williams Snowbound on the walls and Iron Ore on the island…

Why does this combo work?

The Best White & Off-White Quartz Countertops
Snowbound has an LRV of 83, making it a soft, warm white and 23 points away from Agreeable Gray’s LRV of 60. Not only does the LRV difference make these two great coordinating colors, but the undertones fit well together.

AGREEABLE GRAY KITCHEN CABINETS: PALETTE #2
In this next kitchen, while the backsplash is TBA (I have the photos somewhere; I need to find them!), you can see how Agreeable Gray coordinates with Sherwin Williams Pure White…

Sampling paint just got a WHOLE lot easier (and more affordable)!

Pure White has an LRV of 84, making it one of the best shades of white with Agreeable Gray cabinets. Also, notice the EVER-lovely Urbane Bronze on the island (below). As far as Agreeable Gray goes, it loves dark greige (as long as it’s not too warm) as it plays well with its green undertone.

AGREEABLE GRAY KITCHEN CABINETS: PALETTE #3
This next home is one of my favorites, as it’s gorgeous and homey and was done on a BOX O’ WINE BUDGET (a girl after my own heart). As shown below, I’m sure this kitchen was designed in the early 2000s, with medium-toned wood cabinets and a beige laminate countertop (the oak floor is more in the mid-90s).

My client and her hubs put blood, sweat, and beers into this kitchen, using Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray as their cabinet color…

Ideas to Update a 1990s Kitchen
I would love to tell you all about the ‘painted tile backsplash, salvaged marble countertop, and $3500 price tag’, but I’ll let this blog post tell it all.

So, what do you think? If you LOVE Agreeable Gray, check out these comparable shades.

Why don’t paint companies tell you the undertone of their paint colors? For example you mention that Urbane Bronze has a green undertone.
I have no idea – but good thing they don’t, or I’d be out of work! 🙂
Lol! Gorgeous color combo with that snowbound and agreeable gray! Wow!
This is such a timely post! We are planning to have our kitchen cabinets refaced and need a paint color that will work with our sapphire blue granite countertops (#3 in your “How to Update Your Older Granite Countertops” post) and black appliances. The room is dark with an east-facing window, so there’s not a lot of natural light (also seems dark due to the 90’s oak cabinets). Do you have suggestions on Benjamin Moore colors for the cabinets as well as the walls? I like Collingwood or Barren Plain, but my husband prefers Light Pewter (NOT Revere Pewter). The walls are currently a pinkish color and we’re OK with purple (which we have in the adjoining family room). I’m also considering Portland Gray, Elephant Gray, Nimbus, or Smoke Embers for the cabinets. Thanks!!
Hello! I’m in the process of preparing my kitchen cabinets for painting. I noticed that you refer to use BM Advance paint but what do you recommend in the Sherwin Williams line of paints. I’m looking to paint my cabinets in SWPure white. Thank you in advance.
Sherwin Williams Emerald is AMAZING paint!
Is it Urban bronze or Iron ore on the island…one article says UB, the Other says Iron ore?
Hey Tammy! It depends on which kitchen you’re talking about. The very first one is Iron Ore, the second one that’s a bit more rustic looking, that’s URbane Bronze :).
we’re painting our kitchen cabinets agreeable gray with the island slate tile, would incredible white be a good option for the wall, trim and door colors? Do you have another suggestion?
I love the look of agreeable gray on these kitchen cabinets!! I think I’m going to take the plunge and go for it. What is the best backsplash color to pair with agreeable gray cabinets? Would you happen to know what the tiles were in the last pic?
Thank you!!
Hi! We are considering using Agreeable Grey Cabinets with Chantilly Lace walls, trim and ceiling but different sheens. Do you think brushed nickel would go well with Agreeable Grey cabinets? Any suggestion of color of backsplash? Love your posts!
Oh heck, yes, this sounds great! As for the backsplash, you’ll want to combine the needs of AG AND your countertop!
Is there enough of a difference for Agreeable Gray cabinets if the walls are Classic Gray? It’s only 14 LRV apart…. Thank you!
It’s a subtle difference. Is it enough for ME? Nope, I like more contrast, but others are happy with it!
Hi Kylie,
I wish I had your talent! I have searched the internet and TONS of your posts trying to decide on kitchen cabinet color. We are remodeling kitchen from scratch. Our kitchen is east facing, we currently have AG walls with bright white trim. Our floors are hickory and will be refinishing them. We also have committed to a spiced gray (warm) wood island, hood and hutch to add interest. The cabinets will only have a couple of inches of the AG Wall to the southeast side of it. I am looking at Pure White, Colonnade Gray, Worldly Gray or even AG. Would you mind giving me your recommendation as I am totally stuck, obsessing actually and need to make a decision soon. Ugh, help please!
Your videos helped us design our previous house and learning more from you this next go round! We have cherry wood floors. Do you suggest repose gray or agreeable gray? What color cabinets in the neutral family? Thank you!!
