Sweater Weather SW 9548: LRV, Undertones and a Little More
If you’ve been looking for the BEST gray paint color for you and your home, I bet Sherwin Williams’s newest line of colors, The Designer Edition, has just what you need. However, being newer colors, I don’t have any E-Design clients who’ve used them yet (I CAN’T WAIT!).
In order to show you RELATEABLE & REAL homes, I ONLY use photos from my Online Color Consulting clients. This means I don’t always have the quality pics I need, but DEFINITELY have SUPER HELPFUL INFO to help you on your way!
If you end up using one of these new colors and find my reviews helpful, please send photos so others can see how they look!
PLEASE NOTE: Sherwin William Sweater Weather is in the DESIGNER EDITION and can only be made in Sherwin Williams Emerald paint, no other lines.
What type of paint color is Sweater Weather? Is it a cool or warm gray?
Sweater Weather is a COOL gray paint color – not icy cold, but NOWHERE near the warm boundaries.
If you have north-facing light, you can expect this color to look considerably cooler and for its cool undertones to increase slightly. If you have south-facing or warm western afternoon sunshine, Mercurial will hold itself as a cool gray, although its undertones will be a bit muted.

What’s the LRV of Sweater Weather?
Sweater Weather has an LRV of 60, making it a light depth paint color. While this depth can still wash-out in natural light, it will hold its color better than an off-white or BRIGHTER light depth gray paint color.
Not sure what LRV is? It could save your paint lovin’ life – read all about it HERE.
What are its undertones? It is a TRUE gray?
Because there IS no useable TRUE gray, you can bet your booty that Sweater Weather has undertones – blue ones. However, they are SO soft and SO subtle, that it might even take over from Sherwin Williams Tinsmith, as being my fave cool gray with blue undertones.
Blue undertones can lean either blue-violet or blue-green. Sweater Weather is MORE likely to favour a very mild blue-green, but not much of it!
And because it’s a new color, I don’t have photos of it, but you’ll get the general idea from Sherwin Williams Tinsmith…
What’s the best way to sample a paint color, do I need paint pots?
Like with every paint color, I highly recommend using SAMPLIZE. Samplize is a peel & stick paint sample that you can easily move around your room for over HALF THE COST of traditional sample pots – and they deliver right to your front door!
Here’s a link to the SAMPLIZE site if you’re curious!

Hi Kylie!
I am painting my DR/kitchen which has golden oak stained moldings and cupboards. DR has southern light and kitchen , north. Would tinsmith cooler undertone go well next to my wood? I have shiitake in LR nearby. I was also checking out the above mentioned sweater weather and Stonington gray. Your website has been so informative. I pass it along to my family all the time!

Tinsmith COULD be pretty, but can be tough in northern light. A cooler color like this contrasts with the wood, which can be nice. HOWEVER, even more important than the cabinets is finding the best color that coordinates with your backsplash/countertop/flooring as wood cabinets are often the most flexible of them all!
