Sherwin Williams Dover White 6385: Paint Color Review
Is it white? Is it cream? Let’s find out!
Have you been wondering about certain paint colors but can’t find helpful, actionable information—info that’s applicable to REAL HOMES with REAL BUDGETS? Well, I have the blog posts for you!
I’ve created my Color Review series to cover some of the most popular Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams paint colors. Today, we’re looking at Sherwin Williams Dover White, a controversial color that keeps popping up on walls, trims, and cabinets.
But just because it’s popular doesn’t mean it’s the right color for you and your home. Let’s go under the covers to see what it’s hiding…

WHAT TYPE OF COLOR IS DOVER WHITE?
Dover White is warm white, but it’s not a LEGIT white. It’s actually a considerably soft white with some major considerations.
What do you mean?
There are five types of white. Dover White is a warm, soft white with a lot of undertones, which means it isn’t cut out for every home—not even the average home. We’ll get into its LRV and undertones shortly.

Being a warm white, Dover White is often used for north-facing rooms, as its warmth adds balance. It’s also an interesting choice for east—and west-facing rooms at the time of day when they’re at their flattest (east afternoon | west morning).
As for southern exposures, Dover White is tricky as its degree of warmth, coupled with southern light, can be overwhelming.

WHAT’S DOVER WHITE’S LRV?
With an LRV just over 82, Dover White is white but not bright white. It’s considerably soft, bordering on the high end of the off-white range.

Dover White is probably too soft if you’re looking for a legit white with some warmth. You might want to explore whites with a similar warmth but higher LRV. However, Dover White could hit the mommy-daddy button if your goal is a soft, creamy white with a noticeable yellow-based warmth.
Not sure what LRV is? It could save your paint-lovin’ life – read all about it HERE.
WHAT ARE DOVER WHITE’S UNDERTONES?
Yellow, yellow, and…yellow. And for you in the back row, YELLOW! This is the main reason why Dover White is a tricky shade – its undertones are yellow, and they ain’t subtle about it. Sure, it’s not SO yellow that it reads like a ‘color (yellow)’; it still acts like a warm, soft creamy white, but dang, she’s strong.

Dover White is fussy about its color partners, thanks to its degree of yellow. In fact, many cooler tones will enhance the yellow in Dover White making it look even more powerful.

WHAT’S THE BEST WHITE TO GO WITH DOVER WHITE?
Whether you have Dover White trim or cabinets and want white walls, or you have Dover White walls and need white for your trim and cabinets, Dover White is a narcissist, as it really just loves itself.
This probably isn’t what you want to hear, as I have a TON of Online Color Consulting clients with Dover White trims and cabinets, desperate to paint their walls a whiter, lighter shade. No can do, boo.
I take that back. You CAN do it, but it won’t look good, as your ‘whiter surface’ will make Dover White look more yellow/dingy in comparison.

IS DOVER WHITE A GOOD EXTERIOR COLOR
White exteriors aren’t trendy anymore. Sure, the odd home can pull them off, as its style is timeless, but the average home can’t wear them. The nice thing about Dover White is that it’s a soft white, not a bright white, so it won’t look as stark as other whites, but you WILL see that yellow. Whether on your siding or trim, make sure your home and windows can handle a yellow-based white like this.

IS DOVER WHITE A GOOD KITCHEN CABINET COLOR?
Ermmmm, no. While the odd kitchen needs a soft, creamy white like this, Dover White is far too yellow for the average kitchen finish.

WHAT COLORS GO WITH DOVER WHITE?
Dover White is tough. If you’re talking about colors in neighboring rooms, there’s a wide range. But if you’re looking at colors that work with Dover White trim and cabinets, well, you miiiiiight want to read this blog post for some tips.

- Dover White leans towards a more country look, preferring the soft blues and greens of the modern farmhouse style.
- Dover White is NOT as happy when partnered with lighter gray and greige paint colors as the degree of yellow in Dover White can clash slightly with many of these colors. Any greige should have a reasonable depth LRV lower than 60 or so.
- You can also check out darker creams and some tan paint colors.

I do not agree with your assessment of Dover White. I use it for a trim color in my bedrooms. One has walls painted in SW Canvas Tan with west light and the other has walls in BM Sheep’s Wool with north light. I’m getting read to do walls in SW Antique White in a North light. All the trim is Dover White. Looks fine to me. It is a lovely white. I would hate for people to be put off using it because of your review
Hi Nanci, I’m so glad it’s worked for you, I’m sure your comments will help!
I meant to say I used SW Aged White not Antique white in my bedroom. I love that color too
I have Dover White everywhere in my new build…looking for a main color for open concept and don’t want to go too dark (even though I know your advice is to get a color with more “meat on its bones”. Would a color like Wool Skein work since it does not lean gray? Thanks for all of you guidance!
Sarah I have this same exact situation! Did the wool skein color work for you, if not what did you end of using? Thx! I know the post is older but just came across it while researching colors.
Do you have an opinion on Dover White trim and cabinets with Muslin on the walls? For a warm feel. Thanks in advance!
What color would you paint your kitchen walls with Dover white cabinets? I would like to have white backsplash but maybe you could suggest another color for backsplash.
OMG, this explains so much. The trim in the pre-owned home we bought is Dover White. I have been having a very difficult time trying to get a wall color to go with DW as well as the tiled flooring which is more tan colored.
Which one did you end up going with? Sounds like our house here in AZ.
I have Dover White on all the trim (including shuttered windows) of three adjacent rooms in my house. The walls are BM Fog Mist. This is the south side of the house going from east to west. It’s such a beautiful combination that I might use it for the rest of the house (great room). Fog Mist looks significantly different on the east side compared to the west, but Dover White seems consistent no matter where it is. I admit I LOVE the photo you used of DW on kitchen cabinets. That’s my taste I guess.
We have painted our entire house Dover White, using 3 different sheens. We have 3 accent walls that are Tricorn Black. Stained Wooden Shutters and Stained Windows with Gloss Dover white trim. We have exceptional architecture. We have gold tone and brushed nickel hardware. Our home is Striking, our painter said it was one of the best looking interiors he has done.
Hi Gregory, Your description above sounds exactly what I’m going for and I’d love to see photo(s) if you’re willing to share. Thank you
