The 12 Best Budget-Friendly Dining Room Chandeliers

Chandeliers are the MOST fun to shop for – but that doesn’t mean you want to go through hundreds of pages looking for just the perfect one!

I’ve chosen chandeliers that a bit more modest, nothing SUPER over-sized, and are best suited for:

  • A LARGE entryway
  • An average size dining table
  • A large living room with a vaulted ceiling

As with all of my online shopping, I try to balance STYLE, PRICE, and QUALITY. And while I can’t speak directly to the quality of each piece (I’m not crazy enough to order them ALL), I only select items that have 4+ stars. I’ve included some tips near the bottom of the page or you can check out this lighting blog post here!

Many of these come in different finishes, so be sure to check out the details if you love the style!

Here are some online shopping tips to get you started:

  • Make sure that any item you buy has 4+ stars
  • Read the reviews. See how others felt about the quality/colour/comfort
  • Measure twice! Nothing worse than ordering something to find it out doesn’t fit!

What is the right height to hang a dining room light fixture/chandelier?

  • 8′ ceiling: 32 -36″ between the top of your table and the bottom of your fixture
  • 9′ ceiling: 36″-40″ between the top of your table and the bottom of your fixture
  • 10′ ceiling: 40″-44″ between the top of your table and the bottom of your fixture

How big should a light fixture be over a circular or oval dining table?

Ideally, you would have it approx 1 foot less than the width of the table (the widest part). This works whether it’s a circle or oval.

  • 42″ wide: Your light would be approx. 18-20″
  • 48″ wide: Your light would be approx. 24″

How big should a light fixture be over a square or rectangle table?

If your table is a square or rectangle and you want to choose a rectangular fixture, I would lean on the ‘smaller’ end of the scale and choose a fixture that was approx. 1/2 the width of the table and approx. 1/2-2/3 as long.

42″ square table: Your light would be approx. 20″

42″x 78″: Your light would be approx. 20″w x 54″l

How wide/big should a pendant light be over an island or peninsula?

There’s a LOT of room to move with this one and usually bigger is better (another epic love-life reference). Here are some basic guidelines to get you started…

  • The pendant light should sit at least 10-12″ in from the widest part of your countertop. So, if your island is 3′ wide you’ll want the pendant to be no bigger than 12″
  • Don’t cram too many pendants in, while it’s all relative to the size of the pendant there should be approx. 30″ in between bulbs. If your pendants are extraordinarily large, consider 24-30″ between bulbs
