Ikea Kallax / Expedit Ideas and Paint Colours to Match.
(This post had been edited from its original – if you are just looking to match your Ikea products I am currently working on a comprehensive blog post on this. In the meantime check out the info at the bottom of this page)
Are you familiar with the Kallax Unit by Ikea? If not, then get ready for ‘Kallax 101’, otherwise known as verbal diarrhea a la Kallax.
(the former name of Kallax is Expedit)
I could tell you a bajillion ways in which Kallax satisfies every need (short of requiring batteries), but I’d rather have the pictures do the talking. Ya right, you know I’ll keep on blabbing as usual…
Here’s the criterion I used to pick my fave projects…
- They need to be easy (aka – I can do them without major tools or excess wine bottles)
- They need to be affordable
- They need to be awesome and a cheaper alternative to doing something custom or ‘proper’.
The Kallax / Expedit Island
A great way to use the versatile Kallax Bookcase from Dreams of Home
Window Seat or Bench
I..love…this. By Ann Wyse of the blog ‘Anyways’ and I’m not just being rude, Anyways is her blogs’ name!
How awesome is this idea for a playroom, kids room, library or even a kitchen nook area? This project used the Expedit / Kallax $69 Shelving Unit (with homemade tops).
Platform / Storage bed for kids
From Jewels At Home – she’ll show you how easy this really is!
The lovely Expedit / Kallax $69 Unit (2) came in handy for this project. If you put this in a room where it’s away from the wall, you’ll have full use of the cubbies on both sides – even better!
The Kallax Dollhouse
From Designvillecz – I may not know what the heck she’s sayin’ but I love what she’s doin’! (It’s all in Spanish or something)
This lovely home was created using the $79.99 Unit . Some wallpaper scraps, dollhouse accessories and carpet samples and you’re good to go!
From Nidah Spa . I love the idea that I can hide the junk in ma trunk – er’ in ma shelf.
Using inexpensive canvases and eye hooks you can hide your clutter behind handpainted / wallpapered / ModPodged covers while leaving other cubbies open to show off your treasures.
The Kallax Control Center
One of the most popular Ikea hacks out there from The Smith Nest
This idea is SO great because it offers some great storage solutions for papers, magazines, kids stuff, cookbooks and so on and so forth – freakin’ genius!
The Epic Accent Piece
This standard Ikea $99 Unit became a dramatic focal point with a painted backdrop and casters. Love the high impact, high contrast palette!
As I’ve shown above, Kallax is available in a variety of shapes and sizes – anywhere from 1 or 2 cubbies or up to 25!
Here are the colours that are available….
Pack it up and Pack it in!
Check out the add-ons you can buy for your Kallax Unit to fully customize it to your needs!
Insert with 2 drawers (my fave add-on) – $20
Door with mirror – $25
Insert with glass door – $25
Set of casters – $10
Storage box/basket – $5.99
Storage basket – expensive but purdy – $19.99
Benjamin Moore Paint Colours that Best Match Ikea’s Black / Brown and White
The Best Paint Colour to Match ‘Ikea White’
Okay, so I encountered some stumbling blocks when trying to match my beloved Benjamin Moore paint colours to Ikea’s Hemnes White. Why? BECAUSE IT DOESN’T EXIST!
The closest colour match actually doesn’t come from Benjamin Moore, it comes from Valspar. Valspar’s 7002-8, otherwise known as Pale Bloom, is a pretty darn close match (not that the computerized version shows it). And hey, I’m not going to take the credit for this one as this discovery was painstakingly found by Debbie at One Project Closer.
The reality is that to get the best match possible, you need to take a piece of your furniture into the store and have them colour match it for you. Most colour matching programs are about 98% accurate. It sucks, I know. But it’s better to be safe than sorry!
The Best Paint Colour to Match ‘Ikea Black/Brown’
Again, Ikea doesn’t make it easy to match paint colours. My best match – and I assure you that it isn’t a 100% match – is ‘Bittersweet Chocolate’. Ideally it would be just a smidge darker, but you can enhance the darkness of it by choosing a slightly shinier finish like a satin or semi-gloss (satin finish is closer to Ikea’s finish).
I’d match it to other brands, but you know what a snob I am when it comes to my Benny Mo’ colours. And it certainly is close enough if you are painting a piece that will be in the same room – but not directly attached to an Ikea Black/Brown piece.
Well, that was a freakin’ novel. I hope you learned a lot and enjoy creating your own Ikea Kallax / Expedit projects!
