Decorating the Dining Room : My Parents House

Posted on August 25, 2014 by KylieMawdsley

From Dining-Wrong to Dining Room

How do I know my Parents love me?

1.  They didn’t kill our dog after he peed on their new carpet 3 times

2.  They buy me Starbucks when I’m sick at home

3.  They don’t make fun of the fact that we moved 4 months ago and I’m on couch #3 already.

4.  They don’t discourage me from making impulse purchases (like couches) – in fact they lend me their truck and help me load

And most importantlythey let me play with their house.

Now don’t get me wrong – it’s not like I get full reign or anything.  Let’s just say that they are ‘open to suggestions’ and if they aren’t? I pester them until they are.

The Dining Room Before

Before, the dining room had an inherited table and buffet…

hese pieces certainly did the job, but as with many inherited pieces they weren’t necessarily the style my parents would have picked had they bought them new from the store (an understatement btw).

The Dining Room After

open layout kitchen and dining room with benjamin moore smoked oyster, stone house and boxcar red with green accents

It was luck that took me to a clients home where they were selling this AMAZING set with funky green chairs. My mom is a HUGE fan of funky (aka chartreuse) green and while we’d previously nodded to this fetish with a few accessories, this was a way to really COMMIT to it.

Their house has a super unique layout where the open floor plan is separated by a fireplace and surrounding wall (which you’ll see more of when I do the living room post)

We also used their own amazing photography to accent the walls.

The Accessories

The fun part!

The wicker pendant lamps tie into the comfy and rustic nature of the accessories

They also made great use of the buffet and hutch which I refinished a few years ago (here) as we accessorized it with things that are close to their hearts – not just random pieces from a random store.

The Colour Palette

paint colours to complement benjamin moore stone house include boxcar red, smoked oyster and brown horse

The open layout of their main floor is based on a colour palette of Benjamin Moore Stone House, Boxcar Red, Smoked Oyster and Brown Horse

    1. Thank you for asking – I love them too and there’s the coordinating one in the kitchen eating area which is awesome and big! We bought them at McLaren Lighting in Nanaimo, but it was several years ago now 🙁 They might still carry them, but I haven’t seen them for a while in the store. Well hot damn, I hopped onto Wayfair just to see if I could find you a comparable one and THERE IT WAS! http://www.wayfair.com/Uttermost-Woven-Rattan-1-Light-Mini-Pendant-21832-21837-UM3822.html
