The Top Fixer Upper Inspired, Modern Farmhouse Paint Colour Ideas
Whether you’re painting walls, furniture or cabinets, the modern farmhouse look is taking the country by storm and raising country style to a whole new level.
And when I say storm, I’m not kidding! The modern farmhouse style is dominated by stormy grays, greiges, purple, blues, and other colours with subtle, and not so subtle, gray undertones. Along with those stormy tones we’re seeing drops of pastel, vintage and lived-in colours with old-school charm.
What are modern farmhouse paint colours? Generally speaking, they’re colours that give the illusion they’ve been ‘lived in for a while’ and not the ‘kids fingerprints plastered up your stairwell’ kind of lived-in, but rather the slightly worn look that gives a sense of history to a room.
Modern farmhouse or country style paint colours can include the following:
- The ‘washed and worn’ look
- Colours with a bit of gray in them
- Rich, dramatic earth-tones
- Grays with very subtle undertones (purple and blue are the most common)
- Slightly vintage-looking colours
- Buttery, touchable paint colours with depth
And while the modern farmhouse look has a whole lot of other things going on (like texture, wood tones, etc…) for now, I’m going to focus on paint colour ideas for your walls – some real inspirations to get you in the country mood!

Benjamin Moore Army Green 2141-30
For a rich, grounded green look, look no further than Army Green. Whether it’s for a kitchen island or feature wall, Army Green will add just the right dose of colour, without overwhelming a space. I also love the darker, more neutral approach of Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze.
Benjamin Moore Gray Mist 962
Gray Mist is a close cousin to the ever-popular Classic Gray. Gray Mist is a warm gray-greige with a soft, almost creamy backdrop hiding in it.
Benjamin Moore Adagio 1593
I love the softness of Adagio. It’s a great way to get a gray look, with soft blue undertones.
Benjamin Moore Mystic Gold HC 37
Warm colours are making a comeback, making Mystic Gold a great option for a rich, warm look. Even as an accent via accessories like baskets, and toss cushions, Mystic Gold is a great colour to take inspiration from.
Benjamin Moore Black 2132-20
Black is black – ’nuff said.
Benjamin Moore Puritan Gray HC 164
For an ALMOST gray look with a soft blue backdrop (blue-green), Puritan Gray is a beautiful, calming colour for almost any room. It has more green in it than Adagio.
Benjamin Silver Gray 2131-60
With a wink more blue than the average gray paint colour, Silver Gray is a beautiful way to create a soft, cool backdrop for your room. It would be especially nice in a warm, south-facing room.
Benjamin Moore Silver Chain 1472
Silver Chain is an interesting gray as it can EASILY pick up any of the 3 gray undertones, without committing 100% to any of them!

Benjamin Moore Nocturnal Gray 2135-30
I looove this colour with its rich blue-gray approach (and a wink of green as well). Nocturnal Gray would make for a gorgeous feature wall, vanity colour or even for an entire room!
Soft and Pretty Modern Farmhouse Paint Colours
If you’re looking for pretty, you’ve come to the right place (insert my photo here…just joking). These paint colour ideas have just the right dose of colour to give your room a beautiful modern farmhouse vibe.

Benjamin Moore White Down OC-131
White Down is a soft, warm off-white with a creamy base. While there are warmer, richer cream colours, White Down is for those who prefer a more subtle backdrop.
Benjamin Moore Wythe Blue HC-143
Wythe Blue is a light-medium depth blue-green with some gray to calm it down. Hands-down, one of my fave blue-green paint colours.

Benjamin Moore Wedgewood Gray HC-146
Wedgewood Gray is along similar lines to Wythe Blue, but the green is cut considerably back.
Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter HC-172
Revere Pewter is a light depth warm gray with an earthy green undertone hiding inside. Sometimes I like to lighten it by 25% just to lift it up a bit. If you prefer a softer approach, I’ve got tons of grays for you to check out here.

Benjamin Moore Brick Red 2084-10
Brick Red is a rich, saturated red with brown undertones so that it isn’t ‘punch in the face’ red. Perfect for accents.

which color is being used for the trim and siding on this pic

Hi Rebecca! It actually isn’t my project but that’s a stain you’re looking at, rather than a paint colour – which makes it much trickier. It could easily be a blend of a gray stain with a more brown/purple base one.
Hi, Kylie, in the Romantic Glam palette, what is the last color? It looks like there are six colors but only five identified. I love that last color. Thanks!

Hi Alison, of course the ONE i didn’t mention is the one you love – don’t you hate that! To get a colour along those lines, check BM Rockport Gray, BM River Reflections or BM Cape May Cobblestone, see if one of those feels good!
