An E-Design with Edgecomb Gray: The Best Greige Paint Colour!

Edgecomb Gray – My FAVE Greige Paint Colour

Greige is a tricky one. SO many people think that when they choose greige, they’re going to get this perfect blend of beige and gray, but that’s rarely the case! It’s kind of like mixing red wine and white wine – you don’t necessarily get a nice rose (but hey, I’ll drink it anyway).

So, when I’m looking for a relatively well-balanced greige that doesn’t pick up the typical undertones of either taupe or green – I look at Edgecomb Gray. Sure, like any greige, it can pick up a whole WHACK of undertones as it’s easily influenced by its environment/exposure/etc…but generally speaking – it’s pretty damn greige!

I used Edgecomb Gray throughout a local client’s home as shown here in Colour Review: Edgecomb Gray, so when my e-design client was looking for the perfect colour for her home, it was one of my TOP suggestions.

Before, the room felt weighed-down and a bit drab…

After, it looks MUCH more inviting and warm!

Before, the colours were a bit heavy and flat for the treed landscaping outside the windows…

After, when paired with Pashmina in the eating area/kitchen, the palette is way softer and more organic looking – and notice how the wood floors came to life!

To the right of the eating nook above is the kitchen. I have a blog post dedicated ENTIRELY to this kitchen makeover, so you’ll want to check that out once you’re done here, but I’ll give you a sneak peek…

I know, I’m such a tease (ask Tim…), but the kitchen turned out so cool that it really deserves its own spot in the limelight. If you want to check it out, you can see it here (but finish this one first!)

My client ALSO wanted to change the dining room into more of a casual family room, and let me say that it’s a good thing she did…the only thing the old dining room would inspire me to do is drink more.

I was wondering the same thing Alicia! Hopefully she’ll read these notes – but I’m going to send her an email anyway 🙂

Hi Tara, I’m not sure, she kept her original trim colour! Hopefully, she reads this and can let you know 🙂

  1. What are your thoughts about Edgecomb Gray for Kitchen cabinets. I so want to do them in an greige or maybe Stone Lion by Sheriwin Williams . Edgecomb has been surfacing a lot in the last year.
My open concept walls are SW Collonade Gray and my living room bookshelves are Stone lion.

Hi Tara! Between Edgecomb Gray and Stone Lion for cabinets, I would lean more toward Edgecomb Gray, but of course that’s without seeing your exposure/countertops/flooring, so it’s just a guess and preference 🙂

  2. I absolutely love this post! I am currently painting with BM Edgecomb Gray on my walls and BM White Dove for the trim. I am loving the look so far. It’s a work in progress. This gives me hope my living room will brighten up so much more once I have painted. My floors are a similar oak color to this and I was playing with the idea of refinishing in another color, but now I am thinking I will keep it. Lovely home! Thanks for sharing.

  3. Would Edgecomb Gray paint work in a room that had red furniture or does it work best with neutrals like beiges and greys?

  4. I’m painting my bathroom- walls -cabinet-
Door -trim and ceiling. I am thinking about using Alabaster for maybe the cabinets. Which white would be best for the other surfaces? Your blog is very informative. Thanks..

Oooo Carolyn, I’m glad you asked! In a small space I definitely wouldn’t mix whites as one will absolutely make the other look warmer/more gray/blue/etc…you’ll want to do the SAME white for all of the surfaces – and I do have 2 blog posts re: whites (BM and SW) if you want to check them out. My main fave white is BM White Dove…

  5. Does any light gray go well with BM linen white (cabinets) with west windows? I actually like brown, black, gray and cream and use it easily in furnishings but changing the wall paint to a light gray or greige is a challenge.

  6. Did you use a primer while painting the Edgecomb Gray or did you paint two coats?
My Edgecomb Gray is a lot more gray than I anticipated. I’m not seeing in beige.

Hi Jennifer! Edgecomb can REALLY shift depending on your exposure, light bulbs and furnishings – so it’s very dependent! And I always do 2 coats of paint as 1 coat won’t give full body/coverage 🙂

  7. Hi Kylie! I’ve been reading color reviews and blogs non-stop for the last week. This family room transformation is gorgeous. I have a question for you because after looking at so many different color swatches over the last week I feel like my eyes can’t differentiate between gray, tan, beige,… Can you tell me if Edgecomb Gray has more of a “brown” undertone than Accessible Beige? I have a sample of Accessible Beige and though I really like it there are times when almost a “cooler light gray” color sneaks out and I’m just not going for that. I love a good “greige” but I really want one with warmer brown undertones. I think Edgecomb Gray looks beautiful but it does have “gray” in the name so I’m a bit scared. I have beige/tan tile (the popular tile look of the late 90’s/early 2000’s) so I have to choose a color that plays well with that. I appreciate your help/suggestions. Your blog is amazing!

Hi Lori! Well, if you’re nervous about gray, I think you’ll find that Accessible is safer than Edgecomb – especially if you have northern light which will enhance the gray in colours like these :). I don’t know if you can get a colour better than that simply because Accessible is ACTUALLY a beige that just leans a bit into gray. If we take that out, we’re right in the beiges baby!

      1. Thanks so much for the quick reply! Your knowledge is priceless!!! I’ve gotten so much inspiration from the beautiful rooms you have shared. It’s amazing how much a paint color can change the entire feel of a room. I want a fresh look but also a warm look…if that makes sense…lol! I’m going to put Accessible Beige on a few different walls now and watch how it looks at different times of the day. Fingers crossed! If it doesn’t work out I may just opt for a warm white or cream color. I just can’t go back to “tan”…(it’s been tan for about 15 years). I’m ready for a new look! 🙂

  8. Wondering what trim color you would have chosen for this space to go with the Edgecomb Grey?
This project is a great example of the transformative effect that simply updating paint color can accomplish!

  9. Hi Kylie,
It all started with my husband wanting new furniture. then of course I wanted new flooring, and you can’t possibly NOT paint with all of that going on. I have labored over your blog for two weeks and I finally landed on Edgecomb Gray with Chantilly Lace trim. I want to do an accent wall, is there a sage green that would pair well with those colors? My flooring is Tuff Core 826 Oak. It’s multi toned with both warm and cool tones. I’d like the outcome to be tranquil/cozy and I am literally the WORST when it comes to figuring color things out. I’d be forever in your debt if you can point me in a direction! For now back to the ceilings….

Hey Stephanie! It can REALLY depend on the other surroundings, but my FIRST thought is Benjamin Moore Arctic Shadows, which isn’t so much sage, but it’s grayed out a bit and organic like Edgecomb Gray. For more sage, hmmm. Castle Walls is nice, as it winks at sage without being too colorful :). I’d love to see it all done!
