Budget-Friendly Ideas to Add Personality to a Rental
Decorating a rental home or apartment can be challenging when you’re dealing with limited funds, stingy landlords and yearly leases. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t inject some serious personality and pizzazz into your rental home!
Now, of course, there are some ‘no’ cost ideas out there like ‘rearrange your furniture, raid your mom’s attic’ and so on an so forth, but the reality is that sometimes style comes at a cost. However, because I always try to stay ‘budget-conscious’, these ideas will be all about ‘bang for buck!’ (and not street corner style…yes mom, I did just write that)
Idea #1 Paint an Accent Wall
Most rentals have fairly neutral paint on the walls (think blah blah beige). And while your landlords might not let you paint ALL the walls, they might be more open to the idea of you painting ONE wall – with the agreement that when you leave you will paint that wall back to its original colour.
- $$ – Under $50
- Sweat – Just a bit…
- Bang for Buck – 5/5
Idea #2 Change a Main Lighting Fixture
Whether it’s your dining room or master bedroom, find a light fixture that you looove and replace that nasty ole brass one. Tuck the old one in a box and put it in a closet. When you move out, you can easily hang the old one back up and take your uber-fab one with you to your next home!
A feature wall AND a light fixture – BOOM!
- $$ – As little or as much as you want.
- Sweat – Minimal
- Bang for Buck – 5/5
Idea #4 Wallpaper or Fabric Wrapped Canvasses
Wallpaper can be expensive (with quality papers starting at $70 for a double roll). Consider buying several large canvases and covering them in a fabulous and fun wallpaper or fabric. All you need is either a glue gun or a staple gun and you’ll be ready to go!
$ – Super affordable!
Sweat – If you sweat, you’re working waaay too hard
Bang for Buck – 4/5
Idea #5 And for course…PAINT PAINT PAINT
So you can’t paint the walls. Boooo. However, this doesn’t mean that everything else has to stay boring and blah! Look at your existing furniture pieces to see what could be revitalized with a fresh and fun colour! If you don’t have the right piece, go to Ikea, Jysk or a local Thrift shop to find a piece with good bones and a great price!
I bought the cabinet above, used, for $30 and the roll top for desk for $60!
- $ – If you have a piece already it can cost under $25!
- Sweat – maybe a little…
- Bang for Buck – 5/5
